Coffee Talk - Negative Tension & Target Panic w/ USA Archery Level 4 NTS Coach Larry Wise

Listen Later

Very few coaches in the game have the competition, coaching, and judging callous of Coach Larry Wise. He has bee writing about archery form, shot process, and mental game for decades. Larry is my mentor coach when it comes to compound and education but we have worked together on the topic of target panic and the approach to barebow archery that I have learned working with and talking to shooters like John Demmer, Grayson Partlowe, and John Dillinger amongst many others.  The reason they shoot at such a highly repeatable level is because the shot is simple. and biomechanics along with no added movement and response to the string pulling through the fingers is essential.

In this impromtu coffee talk Larry and I continue a discussion about target panic that was prompted by the chapter on target panic in his 7th book going to publisher. As many know I have changed my form and my approach to why barebow archers struggle to hold in the middle. We don't go into full detail on NTS and what does and doesn't work but we talk about the basic approach that we must remove ourselves from the notion that we are shooting the shot. The bow shoots the arrow and we are just part of the system which means we need to remove ourselves and any extra tension we bring to the shot process to not "get in the way of the bow". The most repeatable shot process is the one that needs the less amount of effort. I'm sure more on this topic will come later but the idea of matching what's happening on both sides of the shot process is crucial, that being bow arm and release hand. Get rid of the extra stuff and see what happens!
