  • Cogitations e170: about Hospice care
This episode is from a very emotionally loaded and charged listener question. It caused me to think about how I would explain hospice care to someone who was set against it. The result of that cogitating is this episode. I hope you find it helpful. If you have recently lost a loved one or not so recently and are still emotionally raw please know it is not my intent to aggravate old wounds. God bless you and keep you. If you like what we do and want to support it, www.patreon.com/nearchurches

  • Cogitations e168: about diligence
In this episode we discuss the virtue of diligence. Diligence is careful persistence. How does this apply to our discipleship? hopefully we answer that question and more. Let me know what you think.
Here are a list of verses in Proverbs that deal with diligence:
Pro 10:4  He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
Pro 12:24  The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.
Pro 12:27  The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.
Pro 13:4  The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.
Pro 21:5  The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.
Pro 22:29  Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.
Pro 27:23  Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds. If you like what we do, www.patreon.com/nearchurches

  • Cogitations e167: about what Paul said
Paul, the apostle, made an interesting statement. He said that Christ did not send him too baptize. What does that even mean? Hopefully I explain it well in this episode. Listen to it and let me know what you think. If you like what we do support us at www.patreon.com/nearchurches

  • Cogitations e166: about Pharisees
Today's episode is based on a conversation I have had with a good friend of mine. This is wha he writes:
The following quote is from Everett Ferguson’s book Backgrounds of Early Christianity, “Much of the oral law developed in the Jewish law-courts as they interpreted and applied the law. Rabbis served as judges and trained and ordained disciples to carry on their interpretations. The interpretations placed a hedge or fence around the law, on the principle that if one does not break through the fence then he will not be able to break the law itself.”

What I found interesting was the last half of that quote. While I understand when brethren make the “slippery slope” argument, there was a group who was making that argument long before – and it was the Pharisees. When traditions (and not a thus says the Lord) become a fence around what God has said, individuals are traveling the same path as many of the Pharisees. I hope you will listen to this podcast and think about the idea that what we learn from Jesus' dealing with the Pharisees is that we need to be careful and not become them. IF you like what we do, www.patreon.com/nearchurches

  • Cogitations e164: about once lost always lost
This podcast was done with a post in the WTT group in mind. I posted a quote with an if/then proposition relating to the sacrifice of Jesus. Take a listen and see if you come to the same conclusion as I. Let me know what you think. If you like what we do, www.patreon.com/nearchurches

  • Cogitations e162: about prayer and the Holy Spirit
This episode is answering a viewer question. Actually it is answering two questions that are closely related to one another. How does the Holy Spirit work in our lives today and prayer, how does it work and what part does God play in it? Now that I type this I see that an argument can be made that it is actually three questions. Oh well, let me know what you think. If you like what we do and want to help out, www.patreon.com/nearchurches
