It’s one thing to drink a cold brew, but something quite else to judge it. What should you look for and what constitutes as a “good” cold brew? And how on earth do you know what to add to your brew to make something completely unique and different, and delicious? So you want to throw a cold brew competition?! A lot of work, a lot of caffeine, and a lot of fun, cold brew festivals like this are on the rise in cities all across the nation. But how does one go about creating such an event? In this episode Pablo Lara, the creator of San Diego’s cold brew competition, joins me to share his coffee journey, explain his inspiration to start a cold brew festival, breaks down the challenges and lessons learned, and previews Cold Brew City Fest 2018!

Cold Brew City Fest is San Diego’s cold brew competition and festival. Each year it’s held in December to celebrate the fact that San Diego can hold a cold brew event in December! This year is the third festival and will have over 30 competitors from San Diego, Los Angeles, Tijuana, and the Inland Empire.

There’s a lot of claims about cold brew out there. It has less acid than hot coffee, it’s healthier, it has more caffeine, it can cure cancer….well that may be a stretch! Niny Rao wanted to learn more about a drink she loved, but realized cold brew wasn’t really being studied or researched in the scientific field. She and her colleague Megan Fuller have done not one, but two research studies breaking down cold brew. On this episode, Niny and I delve into her coffee passion and desire to study cold brew, break down her research studies, and study what the results mean for the cold brew industry.
