College Esports QuickTake

For our third episode we went north of the border to talk about leading Canadian university the University of British Columbia. A fantastic school in a beautiful city, UBC offers a robust esports club competing in a wide variety of titles. While they don't have the varsity program that our first two program spotlights do, they have had plenty of competitive success over the years. In 2019, they led Collegiate StarLeague's power rankings, a cumulative point total based on a schools finish in every esport they compete in.

Pearson is not a favorite company of most college students. Something about buying $200 textbooks for every class every year rubs students the wrong way, who woulda thought?

That hasn't stopped the company from releasing a new standard for esports curriculum in the UK in partnership with the British Esports Assosciation. I highlight some of the potential issues with the curriculum but check out this Esports Insider deep dive if you want to learn more about how this curriculum was created and how Pearson is hoping to turn professors who haven't played a video game in fifteen years into knowledgable guides of esports.

Weekly on the College Esports QuickTake we are going to go further in depth with some of the leaders in the collegiate world. Living in Las Vegas, I started close to home with BearUNLV and Milo Ocampo, the former a graduate of UNLV and the latter a current senior wrapping up his term.

Bear streams under the name UNLV and currently works for Smash.gg, he was a strong smash bros player who has become one of the top ranked Mario Kart players in the world. Milo is the CEO of 8-Bit esports and he talks about how an organization that started as a college club was able to expand into professional esports by signing a Rocket League team and competing in the new Rocket League esports structure. The two talk about how their time in college prepped them for esports careers, how collegiate rivalries are still driving esports adoption and what they reccomend for tying esports into a college pathway.

Sure GTA gets the headlines for its love of anarchy but the vast majority of games these days actually have complex moral choices built into the storylines, and those games are having a positive effect on moral reasoning in adolescents, a study from Bournemouth University psychology professor Sarah Hodges finds. We take a look at her methodology, why it argues in favor for ESRB ratings (in some cases) and why video games have a stronger positive effect than a negative one when it comes to moral reasoning.

UC Irvine is one of the first esports programs in North America. The university, located in the epicenter of North American esports, invested heavily in esports programs while most universities were fighting for scraps from administration. (Like me, at the University of Oregon, definitely not bitter).

In this episode we dive into the competitive success, the connections they've made and the scholarships they offer. To learn more about this leading esports program check out an interview with esports director Mark Deppe which was recorded back in May of 2019. Mark, if you're reading this, lets have you back on the show.

Next week we've got UCI's League of Legends rivals Maryville. In the following weeks I want to cover Robert Morris, University of British Columbia, University of Toronto and more. If you're a student at a program you want me to highlight, shoot me a note via my Twitter in the links below and I'll add it to the list.
