Fall camp began for the Spartans this morning, and I wanted to discuss some questions surrounding the program that should be answered in fall practice. I also wanted to touch on Spartan recruiting, which is still having tremendous success, having 10 four-star recruits in their 2023 recruiting class. Michigan State recently added four-star OT Stanton Ramil out of Alabama on August 1st, boosting MSU's class to 24th in the nation. Mel Tucker and his staff are still in the running for several four-stars, and two five-stars in David Hicks (DL) and Samson Okunlola (OT). The whole trajectory of the program is upward, but there are still questions to be answered regarding how 2022 will shape out. Most of those questions will be answered depending on how good new starters at RB, DE, and OL are and how much the DBs can improve. One thing remains true, Mel Tucker and his staff are going to work hard on how to make the most out of what they have.

The Big Ten has played for a combined 9 national titles since the BCS system was introduced in 1998. Two of them were won by the conference, and both of them by one team. The Ohio State Buckeyes. Ohio State has been the only Big Ten team to competitively play for a National Title this century, and it doesn't look like that will change in 2022. With the offensive firepower and defensive veterancy that Ohio State returns, the Buckeyes look to go 13-0 heading into the postseason with a chance to win it all. I think they will go 15-0, being only the 3rd team to do so in the CFP era (including 2019 LSU and 2018 Clemson). Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and others have arguments to challenge Ohio State on a conference championship level, but none have the combination of talent and staff that Ohio State does to win it all.

Yesterday we went over day one of the Big Ten Media Days (media days ended yesterday). Today it was only appropriate to go over day two's participants and talk about what they had to say. In my opinion, day one was much more entertaining than day two (maybe that is just because Michigan was on day one) but it was entertaining nonetheless and I really enjoyed listening to Mel Tucker and Ryan Day especially speak and answer questions. Ohio State, Michigan State, Penn State, Rutgers, Wisconsin, Purdue, and Illinois were the teams that had the spotlight yesterday. I am fascinated to see how the Big Ten East falls into place as three coaches from that division explicitly mention their goal of finishing first in the conference. Ohio State has revenge on its mind, and Michigan State is very comfortable staying in its traditional underdog role. Penn State, on the other hand, seems nearly directionless. I talked about the main points that each coach made and blended that with my own opinions and outlook on their respective program.

Big Ten Media Days just concluded today and I have A TON of thoughts to unpack with you guys. Today I wanted to go over yesterday's speakers and give my thoughts on the programs that participated on Tuesday. Northwestern, Indiana, Maryland, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Michigan were the teams that had the spotlight yesterday. All speeches impressed, but only a few of the coaches' statements full of confidence will live to see another day. Nebraska, Northwestern, and Indiana are in peculiar situations heading into 2022, while Iowa, Minnesota, Maryland, and Michigan have more knowns to their team. I talked about the main points that each coach made and blended that with my own opinions and outlook on their respective program.

The Big Ten always has solid, NFL defensive players. With Big Ten Media Days starting tomorrow, I wanted to discuss the defensive half of my All-Big Ten Team. Reminder, All of these players are fantastic in their own right. We are talking about fantastic college players, most of whom have some kind of future in the NFL. The Big Ten is loaded at LB this year with Luke Reimer, Jack Campbell, Nick Herbig, Cal Haladay, and Junior Colson. Whether their strength is in pass rush, managing the field and tackling, stopping the run, or pass coverage, every offense must keep an eye on opposing in-conference LBs. DE and DT don't have the same amount of returning stars as LB but they bring in fresh new talents such as Jack Sawyer, Mike Morris, and JT Tuimoloau. Nebraska, Michigan State, and Ohio State dominate the All-Big Ten defense, and Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State, and Indiana make consistent appearances.

Nebraska's defense has perhaps been the sole bright spot of the first four years of the Scott Frost era. Every year under Erik Chinander the defense has slowly climbed up the ladder in scoring defense and preventing big plays. Along the way, Nebraska has also produced some great players on defense such as Cam Taylor-Britt. Nonetheless, the blackshirts have still not fielded a Top 25 defense under coach Chinander, but that might change in 2022. With Garrett Nelson and Ochaun Nelson rocking the EDGE position, Nebraska's 2022 pass rush has the potential to be the best in the Scott Frost era. Factor in Luke Reimer and Nick Henrich returning at LB and Travis Fisher having solid pieces at the secondary position, and this defense overall is going to stifle most passing offenses. The question is, when the opposing team runs the football, can the front seven step up and shut it down?

Big Ten Media Days will be running from July 26-27. As a result, I think it is appropriate for me to share my own Preseason 2022 All-Big Ten Team with you all. I have been in the process of making this list for months now, adjusting it as news regarding transfers and depth charts releases. All of these players are fantastic in their own right. We aren't talking about Graham Mertz or Spencer Petras at QB here, we are talking about the CJ Stroud's, Aidan O'Connell's, Payton Thorne's, etc. We are talking about good, great, and/or elite players. Michigan and Ohio State dominated the 1st team, along with having several players (including some backups) on the 2nd, 3rd, and honorable mention teams. Outside of the Wolverines and the Buckeyes, the Badgers and Gophers were plentiful in the trenches and the Terrapins showed their numbers at the wide receiver position. Michigan State, Purdue, Nebraska, Iowa, and Northwestern also made appearances on my 3rd, 2nd, and 1st All-Big Ten offense.

There are only 132 days until the greatest rivalry in College Football is played at 12:00 PM ET. Michigan and Ohio State are primed to be not only Big Ten contenders but college football contenders as well. While this matchup will take place late in the year (specifically during the last week of the regular season), it is well assumed that these teams will be Top 10, if not Top 5 caliber. So as a result of those presumptions, I want to talk about what I think will be the game of the year. Both teams should bring great offenses to the table along with good defenses. Michigan's offense will own the No.1 RB, OL, and TE rooms in the Big Ten while Ohio State will own the No.1 QB and WR rooms. The question for each team is, can Ohio State field a solid defense to go along with their elite offense, and can Michigan's offense take the next step forward to be elite? No matter what, it is safe to say that The Game will be an entertaining matchup, as always.

The Spartans had their best football season since 2015 last year. The 2021 team was a spectacle of beauty, as their offense was explosive and the team itself was clutch. The Spartans played in several close games, and they came out on top in all but one. With Kenneth Walker in the backfield, you knew the Spartans would run the football and keep opposing defenses honest with the play-action pass. With 2021 being months behind us, how does 2022 look to treat the Spartans? Michigan State loses RB Kenneth Walker, DE Jacub Panasiuk, and others but brings back star WR Jayden Reed and QB Payton Thorne. Michigan State in total returns 72% of their production and looks to once again have a solid season under HC Mel Tucker. The question is, what will that translate to on the field?

If it isn't already clear by now, the SEC and Big Ten are bending the College Football world to their will. In 2021 the SEC enticed Oklahoma and Texas to leave the Big 12 and join the SEC no later than 2025. The Big Ten a week ago poached UCLA and USC from the Pac-12 and the two schools are set to join the Big Ten in 2024. The SEC and Big Ten aren't finished either. Both schools are looking to add more schools to approach the ideal 20 or 24 team size that would make up a true super conference. The two conference's expansion moves are only known by a select few, but it doesn't hurt to guess what Kevin Warren and Greg Sankey might be thinking. The SEC is rumored to have invited Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina, and Virginia to their conference. The Big Ten, meanwhile, is busy courting Notre Dame.
