Pastor Martin continues his sermon series through 1 Corinthians in the afternoon service.

The sermon this Sunday introduces the episode of Jesus and the Woman at the Well. The Evangelist draws our attention to several features of the life and ministry of Jesus, features that are especially striking coming on the heels of chapter 3.

This Sunday, the Gospel proclaims the supremacy of Christ and what it means for all of us. As we gather around the Table where we remember the elements that prove our Redeemer’s saving love in history, the Scripture calls us to acknowledge the supremacy of Christ.

This Sunday, we are back in John 3. The story moves from Nicodemus and Jesus’s evening meeting in Jerusalem to a bounty of baptisms happening in the northern country of Judea. John the Baptist is back in focus, but, as we shall see, only to point once again at the Lord Jesus.

This Sunday’s sermon concludes the discourse between Jesus and Nicodemus. Jesus’s final words with this Jewish religious leader explains why, though the Father did not send his Son to condemn the world, Christ’s coming nevertheless resulted in the condemnation of many. In short, people loved the darkness because of their passion for sin. Yet there is hope for all sinners who come to the Light. Such people recognize that all that they are is by the grace of the Son of God.
