Since the movie theater burned down, Abner has enjoyed being boss, and making Lum be his lackey. Is Abner’s humiliations getting to be too much for Lum? Despite a shift in roles yesterday, Abner is back to being bossy. Will it do for Abner to send Lum to the Pine Ridge Business Leader’s club?

Abner insists on putting his foot down, and keeping Lum in his place. Shouldn’t the store send an experienced representative? Lum plays on his past experience with the business man’s club, but Abner insists he should go as the store owner,

Not getting his way, Lum takes a new direction. He butters Abner up, and claims he wants to watch a pro in action. Lum also plays up the important speech giving that Abner will need to do, not to mention they both can’t go and keep up on deliveries, and store operation. Will Abner crack under the pressure?

At Centerfield High School, Henry, and his pal Dizzy try to find a missing lunch box. The guys discuss who to take to the school picnic. Agnes, Henry’s female nemesis, hints that she needs a date to the picnic. Will she hook him up with that mysterious blonde?

At the malt shop Geraldine racks up Henry’sthe bill for , ice cream, pie and malts. Mom brings Henry’s missing lunch box, and gives her son a lesson on telling the difference between a nice girl, and one who is ill-mannered. Before long he has three dates to the picnic.

Can Henry get his sister Mary to help him get out of his date with Agnes? Pawning off a few valuables, Henry manages to afford the lunches for his dates. Since Dizzy is without a date, Henry kindly offfers Agnes to him.

His dates are whittled down to just Geraldine and Agnes. When Agnes has an emergency, Henry shows his true colors when he races to rescue… the lunch basket. The fickle Geraldine abandons Henry for a better catch, but henry finds all he needs with Agnes.

Reconnecting in the store business, the gents find themselves in a role reversal. Abner is president, and sole owner after their arrangement in splitting ways over the movie theater. Lum finds himself as the employee, and delivery boy for Abner. He describes to grandpap, his humiliation in dealing with customers, and delivery mistakes.

Is it too late to go pick avocados as a migrant worker in California? Abner enters to throw his weight around, and give orders to Lum. Abner puts on a good show at being bossy, but he shares with grandpap it’s just to teach Lum a lesson. Grandpap is concerned that Abner may push it too far in his fun.

Abner’s real plan is to increase Lum’s meager wage, but he doesn’t want Lum to jump back into his old role in the store before he’s had to suffer first. Is Abner over promising his goods to the customers on the party line? The line between the job titles soon gets shaky, and is sure to revert back.

Lou rides in on a horse. Bud tries to make Lou give the horse back, but Lou is just too attached to his horse named Peanut Butter. Lou gets confused over what horses eat. Other horse related jokes follow, and confusion about terminology about being a mudder, and having trouble with his forelegs.

Connie Haines sings, Besa Me Mucho. Freddie Rich plays, Pico Pico.

Lou takes his horse to the race track. Mr Kitzel wants to apply for the job of jockey. Jokes are flavored by more horse termonology, and famous horse names. Mr Kitzel is out of luck when Lou’s little brother Sebastian is to ride the horse.

After some more joking around, Connie Haines returns to sing, Trolley Car. The horse races are about to start. There seems to be some medical trouble with Lou’s horse. The veterinarian gives him some double talk instructions.

When Lou tries to place his bet with a female bookie, the races are over before he knows it. Even in a one horse race, Lou has trouble winning. Sebastian tells why at the end.

PS: There’s some confusion, regarding the show air date. I have two listed for it, 440911, and 441109. I don’t know if it aired twice, once for each date. Or if a collector had a dyslexic moment, and transposed the 09 with the 11, or what.

Love that Connie Haines. Glad she got to sing more than once in the show.

Specifically: Vic and Sadecast 068 – Exalted Big Dipper Day (11/6/17)

Here’s an update to my show notes I have for this episode elsewhere on the site,

Vic has a letter from the lodge. Is it another lodge catalog? He has something to ask of Sade, and knowing her typical reaction over lodge related things, he approaches this as humbly as he can.

Normally she is against the catalogs, and any of the silly rituals of the lodge. As Vic has trouble bringing up his announcement of the private, and intimate rituals of the Exalted Big Dipper Day, Rush tries to interject his own comments as he reads from the lodge manual Vic refered him to.

Can his friends watch the spectical?. Just what is Big Dipper Day?

Vic tries to explain the ceremony, the meal of thin soup, rare beef, and the need for Sade to participate. Intimate and precise requirements that mean the world to Vic. Will Sade agree to do her part? Well? What is Sade’s answer? Will she do it? Hey, she’s not without her tender moments for her man.

Lum has been hit hard by bad luck. Today Abner rings the fire alarm to announce the sales promotions in the store. Lum enters, and sees his opening to hint that Abner will need extra help to handle the business from his yellow tag sale.

Abner seems over his regrets, and is fitting into the position as sole proprietor, but he just isn’t picking up on Lum’s hints that he needs a job. Lum brainstorms hard labor jobs, hoping his pal will come to his rescue from a life at such hard work, and take him back. Honest Lum tries to spark Abner’s memory of the good times they had working the store together.

Abner joins in on trying to think of where Lum might work in town. Will he be forced to find work elsewhere? How about loading trucks at the defense plant, or washing dishes for Luke Spears? Will Abner finally recognize his need for an extra worker? Lum tries to play on Abner’s charitable sympathies, but will the two manage to connect on the idea?

On a typical day in the Aldrich home, Henry asks to go to dinner at Kathlene’s house. He forgot this Sunday is Mother’s Day, and now has a decision to make. How can he come up with a nice gift for mom? Can he get someone to pitch in for an even nicer gift? Will he help spring for a dinner or movie out?

Waiting at the crowded movie theater on Saturday night, the family get split up, and mom is bombarded by people trying to sell carnations and candy for Mother’s Day. Family members meet, split, but will they ever get together all at the same time?

What else can go wrong? It starts raining, the stores close before Mary can buy a gift for mom, and what happened to Henry? Will dinner go any better? Maybe an evening with the Anderson’s will be the thing to do? It’s not like Kathleen and her parents were doing anything. Just enjoying a peaceful, quiet, family night at home is all. A combined Mother’s Day surprise sets things right.

Don Ameche and Charlie McCarthy introduces the show.

Donald Nixon sings, One Girl That I Love. He follows it with, O That it Were So. Charlie tells Don about his colossal Christmas shopping service. What has he bought for Edgar for Christmas? What’s so unusual about the gift Edgar wants to give Dorothy Lamour? Nothing, but Charlie doesn’t know what the mules are. Mortimer Snerd arrives to haunt Charlie. The country boy tells about milking cows, and life back on the farm. Dorothy welcomes Don back to the show, then she sings, Day In Day Out.

Don introduces the guest, Geraldine Fitzgerald, and they put on an original drama, Family Album. As they look at photos in her family album, they make comments on the old fashions, and wonder about the level of romance, or lack of it in the old days. Were those old days really so void in passion and drama? Who knew such old fogies could have such a whirlwind romance?

Donald Nixon sings, Song of Spring. Billy Gilbert poetically bumbles his way through his dialect humor with Don Ameche. The poetry reciting may prove that Don has more patience than Billy has ability. Will he get out of having to find a rhyme for silver? From The Connecticut Yankee. Donald sings, I Took One Look At You.

Charlie tries to play detective, as Geraldine jokes around with the guys. Doesn’t she know who Charlie is? He tells her about the latest movie he just made. Will she be impressed by the plot that Charlie lays out? How about if he sings for her? Donald Nixon sings, When Children Pray.

Bob “Christmas Tree” Hope jokes about wrapping Christmas gifts, mailing packages, post office lines, and mishaps. Topics also include horse tracks, Finding the perfect Christmas tree, traffic, and Christmas toys. Jerry Colonna joins the jokes on gift giving.

Francis Langford sings, Winter Wonderland. The cast surprise Bob by Having Madeline Carol on the show. Will he be impressed enough to give them better gifts? Christmas themed jokes continue as Bob talks to the popular star from England, Madeline Carol. Skinny Ennis tries his best moves on Madeline. She tells secrets about having Bob as her leading man in their recent picture together. Introduced as, Vitamin B1 with legs, Betty Hutton is on hand to sing, The Toy land Jamboree.

A letter from Bob to Santa is intercepted, and read by the announcer. Get ready for Bob’s Christmas party where his requests will try to be met. Madeline is back to help with the electric toys on his list. Jerry has been sent to buy presents. Betty and Skinny arrive to comment on the tree. Francis is in time to pass out the gifts. Santa arrives, and Bob shares his appreciation for fans of the show. Madeline leads off in song, Silent Night. The cast and audience join in.

Lum’s motion picture business was virtually wiped out by a fire. Today we find grandpap and Abner talking about the hard luck. Will it appear as arson to the insurance company? Abner recounts to Mousey Gray how it was grandpap’s negligence that started the fire. He layed his lit pipe down on music for his piano.

The gents discuss the state of Lum’s unbuilt empire of movie houses, and that he totally sold out his partnership in the store. Will Lum’s pride keep him from coming back, to ask for his place back in the store? Grandpap isn’t without his own losses, he had his best pipe burnt up in the fire.

When Lum enters, the mood puts on a cheerful face, and Lum seems to be bouncing back well. Will he have to pack up to move to Hollywood? He drops hints that he would sure like a good home cooked meal, but the gents are oblivious to his intentions. Will his pal Abner pick up on his signals? Is Lum hinting that he’ll spring for a dinner for his friends in the restaurant?
