George is feeling down after his recent failures in politics and music. Gracie tries her best to comfort him before the postman visits. How does the mail carrier maintain his exuberant, cheerful demeanor? Elsewhere, the Kansas City Chamber of Congress is meeting. Though they intend to send a telegram to their favorite singer, Dinah Shore, an address mix up finds it delivered to George.

Jimmy Cash sings, Amour. Still finding it hard to believe that he’s Kansas City’s favorite singer, George is on cloud 9 as he sings. Of course Bill Goodwin wants to go along… and pitches the sponsor product. Tootsie Sagwell arrives to hear the good news. Will George let her go too, and look for a man? According to Gracie, it’s where she and George spent their honeymoon.

Felix Mills and the Swantettes perform, The Doodle Bug Song. Looking in at the real favorite singer of Kansas City, Dinah Shore, gets a phone call to invite her to sing. With George’s head so far in the clouds, he doesn’t recognize what’s going on around him at the ticket booth at the train station. With travel restrictions in affect, George has trouble with his reservations.

Back home, Gracie tries to smuggle Tootsie into her luggage. Not to be held down, George sets out for Kansas City on his own.

In epilog, Bill shares a parting word, in light of D-Day, to keep giving kitchen fat to the war effort. Gracie and George make an appeal to keep buying war bonds, especially in light of the invasion news.

A brand new sponsor, a brand new cast, and a brand new show for Bob Hope. Bob jokes about his relatives, the American Legion, women’s upswept hair-dos, Hoop skirts, and Skinny Ennis and his band. Skinny sings, Change Partners.

Bill Goodwin is the announcer, and after pitching the sponsor, Bob introduces his guest, Constance Bennet. Jokes turn to Charlie McCarthy, the famous ventriloquist dummy. Constance tells about her plans to see a girls baseball game. Bob a nd Bill join her to see the game. Jokes include hair, actors in the crowd, and assorted slants on girls and baseball. The Six Hits and a Miss sing, My Walking Stick.

Jerry Colonna sings, but Bob interrupts him for a round of teasing. They joke about playing cards, and wax dramatic. Jerry finishes his rendition of, Road to Mandolay. What kind of theaters has Jerry played in? Jerry finishes his rendition of, Road to Mandolay. Bill Goodwin puts in a sponsor message.

Bob puts on a detective spoof to investigate what happened in the song, A Tisket A Tasket. As Filo Pants, he and Bill Goodwin joke their way through the mystery. Constance is on hand to play the straight lines as Jerry add his eccentricities to the mix.

Our versatile host, able to plumb the depth of acting, is given a well crafted and lovely introduction by Don. Mary enters to keep Jack humble. Phil at least stays on a complimentary tone for his boss. Jack goes along with the gag, but broods a little when nobody cares enough to ask him about his missing car. After Kenny Baker arrives, it is revealed the cast is incorporated into a club to build up Jack and tear him down. After Don gets dramatic in sharing the sponsor message, Kenny sings, New Moon and an Old Serenade.

Mary keeps giving Jack a hard time over his comedy, but he claims his agent keeps him busy at meat markets. As Jack introduces the next production of the Flying Bennies, a knock at the door brings in Andy Divine. The gang is invited to his party for his parents golden anniversary. The topic of the missing Maxwell is brought up, and Andy brings out a car salesman in case Jack needs to replace it. Phil plays, My Heart Stood Still.

Another film success is to be portrayed, the Hound of the Baskervilles. With time on the short side, at least a preview will be given. Rochester phones in with a last moment problem from home. Jack is holding him responsible for the missing car, and docking his pay for incidents with Carmichael. The highlight reel begins. Elementary Watson… bark… howl… and more such sound bites from the movie.

A man from the Treasury Department is to visit today, and with the telegram that outlines the expectations, the gents are worried. Will it involve back taxes, standing before a federal court, or something equally bad? Lum gets the idea to phone Dick Huddleston to see if he has the original telegram in his store.

Grandpap is manning the store for Dick, and reports that Dick and the official are at the flag pole. Lum and Abner are to stay put until they’re sent for. Does the gathering crowd that Abner can see mean a public hanging is in their future?

Cedric enters with a cheerful, “Wonderful world!” He doesn’t know what it’s about, only that he is to bring the gents to the flag pole. Abner frets, Lum is humiliated, and they drag their feet as they walk their longest mile. Has all their smiling friends turned them over to the penintentary? The honor from the Treasury Department comes as an especially pleasant surprise to the condemned men, and they are pleased at the award for their war bond work.

Nature lover, Mable Melrose has left town, and to everyone’s relief, including Lum. In the Jot Em Down store, the gents review local families to see if they can raise more money for war bonds. Still, Lum thinks he may have to join the foreign legion to totally forget Mable.

Putting his one track mind to work, Lum talks about each family in turn. The Abernathy’s, the Adam’s, the Barton’s, and various love interests and gossip of the soldiers and sailors sent off to war. The distraction of the gossip is interrupted when grandpap enters. He has another telegram to deliver. A citation is to be awarded, as noted in a previous telegram that he… um… somehow didn’t deliver.

Is the citation for a mistake on an income tax form? Where is that other telegram? Grandpap needs to phone home to see if he left that telegram there. Nobody would be so careless as to write recipes on the back of a telegram, or throw one away… would they?

After Mousey’s battle scar has been explained, it’s time to put some closure to the saga of Mable Melrose, Abner enters to report she’s packing her bags, and getting ready to leave town. Lum is worried that it’s due to him breaking her heart. Huh? Abner shares that folks in town think she might be a little touched in the head.

Lum still can’t stand the thought of her leaving in tears. But that’s not the way Abner seen it. Lum figures her happy front is just a disguise for the broken heart Lum gave her, and secretly wants him to race over to propose.

Grandpap enters to tell about Virgil Breckenridge, and the hazards of eloping using a rope ladder. A phone call from Lizabeth seems to confirm Lum’s ego when he is requested to bring a ladder over. Does Mable want to elope… or suicide herself? Lum feels its his gentlemanly duty to do the right thing and elope. Abner bursts his bubble when its only to rescue a cat from the barn roof.

Vic is on cloud nine after being lavishly complimented from a co-worker. He is so thrilled, that he shares a little more than he needed to, and Sade is suspicious. Especially when she figures the complements came from one of the female workers at the plant.

Suddenly Vic back pedals, knowing the person behind the compliments will get Sades hackles up. Too late. The trap is sprung, and the more Vic tries to avoid the answers that Sade wants, the more guilty he looks. Part of the flattery involves suggesting that Vic write a series of articles. Sade lets Vic wax poetic on the matter, sharing with Russel on the article content, but you can bet Sade is only biding her time to sink the claws in and mark her territory.

When fishing season rolls around, Fibber is ready to take his tackle to the beaches, and catch a prize fish. Old Muley is the famous fish who has evaded the hook for years. Molly doesn’t understand the quality of fishing gear, and would rather just go to a movie. Alice Darling enters to tell about her father, and his fishing trips. Since Alice doesn’t have much first hand desire to fish, Fibber tells of a near miss in catching Old Muley in the past. Billy Mills plays, Holiday for Strings.

At city hall, Fibber goes to get his fishing license. Mr Wellington is on hand to tell about his nephew the dog catcher, and other relatives in city government. Does Fibber know anybody who can pull some strings to get him a fishing license any quicker? Harlowe Wilcox enters to spin the topic for the commercial.

A speech writer gets input from Fibber, while he waits in line. Fibber gets confused over words, then Beulah is spotted in city hall. She has come to pay on a tax bill. She’s also confused over what the decimal system is. The Kingsmen sing, Twenty Seven Times Around the Block.

Who can Fibber talk to pull some strings? Is the mayor in, or someone who can speak to him on Fibbers behalf? As Fibber struggles to get his license the easy way, he runs into Doc Gamble. An argument ensues as to which is the better fisherman. Finally, has Fibber found his political clout to get his license?

Fortune sometimes comes and goes. Today it is about to change for the Anderson family. Jim and Margret argue, the kids bicker, it just never seems to stop. When dad gives in to mom, is it prime time for the kids to ask for new furniture? Will anybody ever let Kathy tell one of her old jokes?

A sweet deal over the radio motivates Jim to send the old furniture away, and win new stuff in the radio contest. Those movers who just hauled away the furniture were from the radio station… right? I think Kathy has a riddle that dad can’t answer.

At least with the furniture gone, the house looks more roomy. Should they call their insurance company? The police? With the hour growing later, where will sleepy kids sleep? Will it do to phone moving companies in town? The kids who had been complaining about their beds, and furnishings aren’t as keen on roughing it without beds as dad is.

Fortunately, the moving mix up has a way of solving itself. Sort of…. Jim has one last twist of fortune with the jovial mover.
