Comedy Theory Taste Test
The show that didn’t get done on Wednesday happened Thor’s Day instead. Your host reminds you that when you tell him something was funny on the show that looks are not everything.
Spike Robinson joined Chuck and brought jokes. Plus the offensive nature of words versus the defensive reactions of the audience. What has changed over time seems to be considered much less than the outrage of the day.
Is all comedy based on pain? What may or may not account for taste is way more subjective it seems. Spike introduced Chuck to some material he never heard of, and we learn what might strike Chuck as hilarious is not taken well by Spike.
Lenny Bruce would be on the one hand tame by today’s standards of profanity, but be even more controversial on the PC meters. When is a joke just a joke? What are jokes meant to provoke? Is anger funny? Are some people simply so much more talented than others that they can make everything funny? Is stupidity funny? Are all rape jokes created equal?
Racial and ethnic humor is not always as evil as some say. Chuck didn’t even say the word Retarded once. Is making people uncomfortable an artform? How man layers are in a good comedy burrito? Is Chuck’s bad impression of Trump funny?
As usual, a conversation with Spike is unique. Can we actually learn more about the factual world through the looking glass that comedians can hold up to their audiences? Are these all really just white people problems?
