Grant Stoye returns to the Cryptid Creator Corner and things get stilly fast. Grant is here to discuss the return of the Ringo-nominated anthology YULE. For volume 2, Grant has assembled some incredible creators to tell terrifying tales. From the Kickstarter page: "The award-nominated collection of short horror comics returns to examine Yule, Winter Solstice, Jacob Marley, and a slew of other terrifying folklore from around the world, from well-known tales of the Mouse King to the lesser-known Kukeri, and all the bizarre traditions in between." Grant and I discuss comics and crowdfunding, his hatred and my love of scrapple, and I make a riveting defense of pineapple on pizza. Plus I terrify Grant with tales of my favorite late night after a few beers sandwich!

Actor Danny Trejo is launching his own comic book, Year of the Devil, and today I'm sitting down with co-creators comics writer Chris Yates and award-winning transmedia creator Keith Arem of PCB Entertainment panel plunging the Aztec mythology, biblical prophecy, and supernatural horror behind this exciting new five-issue crowdfunding graphic novel series.
We cover the Massacre of Toxcatl, the Siege of Tenochtitlan, protagonist Diego de Rojas's reincarnation curse, the Biblical Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse showing up to wreak shop, and how Danny Trejo's real-life lineage shaped the story's origin.

Zack Kaplan returns to the podcast and we have a lot to discuss. The 3rd season (yes, Zack uses seasons rather than volumes) of Kill All Immortals starts with issue 1 on October 7th. Frey and her fractured family are up against a bunch of newly introduced immortals and thinks get bloody fast. The Smart Division issue 2 is out September 30th. According to Dark Horse this series is, "A dark and modern sci-fi detective series set five minutes in the future. When a mysterious new predictive artificial intelligence program appears responsible for assisting someone in the perfect murder, a pair of unlikely investigators, a chaotic Gen-Z savant and a veteran FBI agent, must hunt down the killer by starting the FBI’s first AI crimes division." Only the Save are Left 4 is also out October 7th. In this penultimate issue: "While at odds with his depraved mentor, Ryder must escape deadly marauders, a horde of monsters, and total mayhem. The ever-growing dangers of the post-apocalypse force Ryder to finally confront the possibility that he cannot survive this ordeal and save his first love without making the ultimate sacrifice." As you can see, Zack has been extremely busy, and he dives deep into each series.

Kenny Porter returns to the Cryptid Creator Corner and he's brought Tyrell Cannon with him so they can discuss their new IDW Dark series Operation: Iron Coffin. It's Dracula against a train full of Nazis! That's really all you need to know. This series is fantastic! I had a blast reading it. Issues 1 and 2 are out already and issue 3 comes out September 30th. Kenny and Tyrell discuss whether they consider this a sequel to Bram Stoker's Dracula, what sets their story apart from other vampire stories, and why giving Dracula back his humanity makes for a more interesting, more complex tale. Tyrell discusses design choices, his influences, and his thoughts when coloring the comic. It's not to late to get caught up on the series or you can order the trade.

What if DOGE got its hands on a bioweapons lab? That's the premise of Mad Science Division, the new horror series from Ignition Press and today Byron is sitting down with co-creators Dan Watters (Nightwing, Batman: Dark Patterns) and Brian Level (Poison Ivy, The Unsleeping Eye) to get into it.
We cover the institutional/bureaucratic angle to using the mad science trope (think Hawkins Lab from Stranger Things or Resident Evil's Umbrella Corporation but with a nepo-baby executive running the show) and why they chose the unfit-son narrative thread running through Chief Coordinator Archimedes Anderson (who gives off immediately please punch me in the throat vibes.) We also get into why body horror is having such a massive moment in film and TV right now and why comedy and horror might be the tandem bicep of creative muscles (they work together, get with the metaphor.)

Mad Science Division
It’s no secret Archimedes Anderson is a nepo hire. Assigned chief-coordinator of R&D at the American arm of genetic engineering and bioweapons development company Miyashi-Smith, everyone knows he’s here for one purpose: to slash the budget and trim the fat. If he can cut 30% from the unaffectionately nicknamed “Mad Science Division” budget, he’ll earn a cushy, high-level job at HQ.
He goes in with a move-fast-and-break-stuff attitude, knowing absolutely nothing about the dangerous genetic experiments taking place in the division. When he upsets the delicate equilibrium of the department factions and removes guard rails which protect the workers and the public, he winds up exposing them to terrible, evil experiments.

I feel like this episode has been a long time coming as I have been wanting to interview the Hivemind since Byron started the podcast. Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing make their Cryptid Creator Corner to discuss their new IDW Dark series You'll Never Leave This Place Alive. Collin and Jackson collaborate with Philly artist and friend of the podcast Heather Vaughan for this horror series that sees a group of teens raised in an isolated community to be better than their counterparts in the outside world, but find that the parents that raised them may be hiding some very dark secrets. Collin and Jackson discuss the origins of the series, why they wanted to write horror and what gave them the confidence to tackle this. They also sing the praises of Heather Vaughan (as we all should). We also get to chat about Star Trek: The Last Starship and get a taste of the new Dark Horse Comics Dungeons & Dragons series they will be writing. You'll Never Leave This Place Alive is out October 14th.

Jordan Blum returns to the podcast and he's brought along Scott Koblish with him. Jordan and Scott (along with Tim Seeley, HI-FI, and Nate Piekos) have a brand new Dark Horse Comics series The Big Shakedown. Issue 1 will be at your Local Comic Shop on September 16th. I loved the first few issues of this exciting new series and it was fantastic to chat with Jordan and Scott about Los Angeles, surf noir, creating a badass mess of a detective, and making sure the City of Angels was its own character in the story.
Here is what the publisher had to say about The Big Shakedown:
The Big One, the earthquake to end all earthquakes, has finally struck Los Angeles. The government decides not to rebuild and the city becomes a no-man's-land for those who refuse to leave it. But hey, you can't beat the weather.
Five years later, Ester Blanco, a down-on-her-luck former PI, is willing to do anything to escape the City of Angels. She believes she's found her ticket out when a desperate father hires her to solve a missing persons case in a city where a third of the population is already missing. Instead, the trail of this lost girl leads Ester to uncover a dark web of cults, conspiracy, and corruption that threatens every Angeleno who stayed behind.

Comics writer and Yeti friend Christof Bogacs returns to talk with Byron about releasing two new middle-grade graphic novels at one bloody time: Lex Luthor: Diabolical Genius from DC Comics, a comedic Lex-vs-Batman caper with artist Valerio Chiola; and the deeply personal Earth to Chris Cleevy, a semi-autobiographical story about Christof's own journey growing up with OCD.
Lex Luthor: Diabolical Genius from the publisher
Lex Luthor is many things: Inventor. Genius. Criminal mastermind. He’s alsobarely a teenager.
When his father, Lionel Luthor, is thrown into prison by none other than that meddling blue Boy Scout Superman, the heir apparent to the Luthor crime empire must find a way to get his revenge. And Lex has the perfect plan. With the help of his infamous bodyguard Slade Wilson, he is going to kidnap Lois Lane. Lex knows that Superman would trade just about anything in exchange for Lois’s safe return—maybe even Superman’s ultimate weakness.
But what happens when Clark calls in his broody friend Batman instead?
