Comics and Chronic

On today's new episode the guys talk Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees

Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees is an original graphic novel written and drawn by Patrick Horvath and published by IDW about Samantha Strong, a serial killer who is also a beloved member of her small, anthropomorphic animal town. When a rival killer begins murdering locals, Samantha must hunt them down to protect her secret and prevent the town from self-destructing. The story is known for its dark, violent plot juxtaposed with a cute, Richard Scarry-style art style.

But first did Cody make sure the military wasn’t at New York Comic Con? Was this one of the best books of 2024? Does this comic have Dexter vibes? What do we call watching movies with William Hurt? Does this book take place in the 80s? Is Cody aging like fine wine? How does Samantha Strong feel about her community? Did we guess the killer? What’s going on in the next volume of this series? How cold is Samantha? Is Good Luck Chuck the Casablanca of our generation? What is scary and creepy about the first murder that draws you in? What does Anthony tell us about DC KO? What other crossovers are happening in comics recently? Who would win between Samantha Strong and Scorpion from Mortal Kombat? Who would we be in this comic? Did Satan tempt Eve to smoke from an apple? Find out the answer to these and more on the newest issue of Comics and Chronic!

On the newest episode of Comics and Chronic the guys tackle season two of James Gunn’s Peacemaker.

The second season of the American black comedy superhero television series Peacemaker is based on the eponymous character from DC Comics. While the first season is a spin-off from the DC Extended Universe film The Suicide Squad, the second season is set in the DC Universe which is a "soft reboot" of the DCEU.

But first is Cody the Devourer of Segueways? Did the guys have to get used to the new intro? Are these characters inconsistent in different projects? What’s the theories Jake read about Rick Flagg Sr.? Was there too much music in the finale? Were the issues with the cast or storytelling? Why is Lex Luthor popping up cool? Do we wanna see the Legion of Doom in the future of the DCU? How were Judomaster and Economos? Does Jake love the band The Diddle Finglers? What internet reference does Anthony make to repulse Jake? Was Anthony a celebrity at New York Comic Con? What was the most exciting take away from the Mortal Kombat II trailer? Find out answers to this and more on the newest episode of Comics and Chronic

This week we’re talking Absolute Batman Vol. 1: The Zoo by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta

But first, who is an Absolute Baby? What does Cody think about the new HBO series Task? Are the boys divided on this comic? Was it too edgelord? What did we think of the character designs for this universe? How does this compare to the other Absolute books? Is this Scott Snyder’s All-Star Batman & Robin? Would this Gotham fit in the Tokyo Drift universe? Do we care about Red Hood? Is Black Mask more formidable in this universe? Does Batman punt a kid? Were we big fans of the art in this comic? How was Jake’s LA Comic Con experience? Did Tom King take a copy of Superguy? Why the fuck does AI Stan Lee exist? Will Anthony and Cody be at NYCC?

This week we're releasing another episode from the Patreon vault!

We discuss the 2007 comedy musical Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story written by Judd Apatow & Jake Kasden. This movie stars John C. Reily, Jenna Fischer, Tim Meadows, Kristen Wiig and a slew of some of the best comedic actors. "Following a childhood tragedy, Dewey Cox (John C. Reilly) follows a long and winding road to music stardom. Dewey perseveres through changing musical styles, an addiction to nearly every drug known and bouts of uncontrollable rage, until finally, he wins the heart, but not necessarily the body, of his loyal backup singer, Darlene (Jenna Fischer)."

The film is very much a product of parody for such films like Walk The Line, Ray, and many other musician based biopic films. The boys discuss Gooning, The Goon, and Goon June. Meanwhile it's revealed that Cody jizzes wine. John C. Reilly is actually singing in this film and is also a blue/country singer with his own band. Who's funnier, John C. Reilly or Will Ferrell? He also has a lot of range with such projects as Boogie Nights, Gangs of New York, & Winning Time. Anthony reveals this is his favorite movie. The comedy is so well written that even the dumb jokes are not just pulled out of the air but well crafted. John C. Reilly is capable of crying on command. Anthony shares a ghostly story that occurred in his basement. Did LSD open Anthony to being susceptible to being possessed by the devil? It's hands on sight for any guy named Schuyler!

On today’s new episode we talk The Toxic Avenger (Vol. 1) by Matt Bors and Fred Harper published by Ahoy Comics

But first, is Jake the toxic glue that holds this podcast together? Has Cody ever seen 2001: A Space Odyssey in its entirety? What’s our favorite Kubrick movie? What’s the conspiracy behind Eyes Wide Shut? Is David Fincher an intense director? Why is Anthony shocked to be called a conspiracy theorist? Who’s behind the Betty Yayo 2069 Twitter account? Did the Palestine, Ohio train incident inspire this comic? Are there insect aliens amongst us? Was this adaptation what we were expecting with this character? Did we like the changes from the Troma movies it’s based on? Have we had a lot of Ahoy creators on the pod? Would Cody be our very own Toxic Avenger? Is ICE coming for Cody? What happens when you goof to close to the sun? Do dudes rock? Does Peter Dinklage take jobs away from little person actors? Are we excited for the new Toxic Avenger movie based on the trailer? Have we seen any of the original Toxic Avenger movies? Is this comic able to do things a low-budget Troma movie could never do? Is there a lot of body horror in this series? Were we big fans of Fred Harper’s art? Is The Meg just dumb? How is this comic smart, dumb, and fun at the same time? Is Tromaville in New Jersey? Are The Toxic Crusaders on the way? What is Toxie Team-Up about? Would this version of Toxie translate well into a half-hour TV series? Does The Mothman belong to West Virginia? Is Mothman ACAB? This week on Comics & Chronic the boys bring you another Half Baked episode with Jake & Cody!  This week we’re discussing the latest hit horror film Weapons written, directed, and produced by Zach Cregger. SPOILERS AHEAD.  The less you know about this movie going in, the better!  He wrote and directed Barbarian and is most notably known for being one of the founding members of sketch comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U’ Know.  Check out our Barbarian episode!  This film stars Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams, & Alden Ehrenreich as the main POV characters with Amy Madigan as Aunt Gladys.

“ When all but one child from the same classroom mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.”

But first Cody & Jake agree on eating Diane Lane’s 🍑.  Cody takes shots at Jenny Slate.  Would Anthony have seen this movie if it was a comic book movie?  Jake has never seen Halloween 3 Season Of The Witch. This movie is both equally hilarious as it is scary.  Zach Cregger definitely outdid himself with this movie and really improved as a director.  This movie has some of the most disturbing body horror in a film in a long time.  This is one of the best movies because of the collective shared theatre going experience with an audience.  Tune in now!

On the newest episode of Comics and Chronic the guys talk Alex Ross’ Fantastic Four: Full Circle

Fantastic Four: Full Circle is the first longform work written and illustrated by acclaimed artist Alex Ross, who revisits a classic Stan Lee–Jack Kirby story from the 1960s and introduces the storyline for a new generation of readers. With bold, vivid colors and his trademark visual storytelling, Ross takes Marvel’s first team of super heroes to places only he can illustrate. The book also features a special poster jacket, with the front flap unfolding to reveal an all-new fully painted origin story of the Fantastic Four

But first have mushrooms gotten stronger? Was Alex Ross on some shit when he illustrated this? Is Cody having a change of heart about Fantastic Four? Is the art the best in the game? Should we cover the Marvel cosmic event Annihilation? Is this a good jumping off point for comic book readers? Is The Thing anti-trans? Is Bad Bunny a good actor/wrestler? Who would we cast him as in the MCU? In the MCU keeping Robert Downey Jr forever? What do we think of Adam Sandler’s movies? How was Happy Gilmore 2? Is our Patreon in the Negative Zone? Find out the answers to these and more in our newest episode of Comics and Chronic!
