This week on Comics and Chronic we’re marking our milestone 300th episode with Zack Snyder’s 300 based off the cult classic graphic novel by Frank Miller.

In 480 B.C. a state of war exists between Persia, led by King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), and Greece. At the Battle of Thermopylae, Leonidas (Gerard Butler), king of the Greek city state of Sparta, leads his badly outnumbered warriors against the massive Persian army. Though certain death awaits the Spartans, their sacrifice inspires all of Greece to unite against their common enemy.

We made it to episode 300 despite Cody’s sabotage attempts at a comedy festival & Anthony’s desire to change our name.  But first Jake learns how to correctly pronounce Bon Iver.  This movie is stacked with actors such as Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, Dominic West, Michael Fassbender, & others.  Is this movies ableist?  This is a dude’s DUDE movie.  Men killing, sweaty CGI and, boobies, murder, blood, wolves, cripples everything a man needs to see to feel like a man.  Also gave rise to one of cinema’s most famous lines:  “THIS IS SPARTA!”  This is easily o e of or if not Zack Snyder’s best movie.  Some great fight scenes and cinematography even with the CGI.  It’s also almost page for page the comic 300.  Could the Hot Boys have held the hot gates?  Where does 300 rank on Zack Snyder’s movies with fans?  Anthony’s childhood is similar to that of a boy’s childhood in 300?  Did this movie destroy what the ideal male body should look like?  How does this movie age now that we’re no longer hormonal teenage boys?  Tune in today for our milestone 300th episode!

This week on Comics and Chronic we’re following the blockbuster movie Superman (2025) with a titular story Superman For All Seasons by Jeph Loeb & art by the late great Tim Sale.  Lettering by Richard Starkings & coloring by Bjarne Hansen

“Told through the course of four seasons in the Man of Steel's adolescent life, this collection illustrates that it is the person, not the powers, that makes Superman a hero."

SUPERMAN FOR ALL SEASONS is emotional and insightful, humanizing the alien from another planet so that he is not only realistic but also relatable. It also features in-depth characterizations of Lana Lang, Lex Luthor, Lois Lane and the Kents.”

But first Cody gives an assessment on his second go around on James Gunn’s Superman.  This is some of Tim Sale’s finest most gorgeous artwork.  Does Jake hate Kansas and rural America?  Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale capture the golden age of superheroes perfectly.  A lot of this team’s comics have bitter sweet and open endings, they’re never quite a “happy ending”.  Jake drops some his take on Hope.  Superman is a CHONKY Boy in this story.  There’s very little action this story but only because the story is what drives it and allows the art to shine.  Lex Luthor utilizes Super COVID-19 to attack Metropolis. Are there vague whispers of another season of Sopranos September?  Cody reveals he’s part Italian and therefore hates himself?  Tune in this week to learn more about Superman For All Seasons and stay tuned next week as we reach our milestone 300th episode!  And of course you already know, we’ll be discussing 300!

Was it fun to see Superman get his ass kicked? How did we feel about Jimmy Olsen? Did we like the portrayal of Ma and Pa Kent? Is this more like a Year Three Superman? What unique perspective does Jake offer about the end of the movie? Did David Corenswet pull off an amazing Superman? Would this Superman smoke weed with us? Did everyone in our theaters pop for Supergirl? Was she straight off the pages of Woman of Tomorrow? Did the characters feel real? Is Ultraman Bizarro? Did Superman kill in this movie? Did we like the design of The Engineer? Was this movie stacked to the gills with baddies? Did Hawkgirl murder Benjamin Netanyahu? Did Nathan Fillion kill it as Guy Gardner? Was he the coolest onscreen Green Lantern we’ve ever gotten? Did Mister Terrific have one of the best scenes in the movie? Did this movie need more needle drops? Did Cody and Jake think there was too much Krypto in this movie? Was Krypto’s scene with Lex Luthor too similar to Hulk vs. Loki in The Avengers? Did Superman use a ton of cool fighting moves? Did we like the way flight was shown in the film? How do we feel about the change to Superman’s parents? Is Superman getting his ass kicked justified? Is there too much packed into one movie? Who are we in the movie? Does Anthony know all celebrity Anthonys? Do we want to see more Metamorpho? Are we going to see the Justice Society or Justice League in future movies? Is Slenderman in this movie? Was Lex Luthor’s inter-dimensional prison The Phantom Zone? Was the movie paced in a weird way? Is Superman better when you watch it a second time? Does The Suicide Squad rank higher than this? How does it compare to Guardians of the Galaxy? Is this one of the best DC movies ever made? What will Superman 2 be about?

How is Paulie playing both sides? What happened between the convo on the phone with Carmine and Tony? What creeps out Silvio and Christopher? Is Johnny Sack a likable character? This week on Comics and Chronic we discuss the 2005 Fantastic Four movie!  With a star studded cast including Chris Evans, Jessica Alba, Loan Gruffudd, Michael Chiklis, and Julian McMahon this might be the gold standard, or only standard, for Fantastic Four casting.  Early 2000’s Marvel appears to be very anti-corporate sentiment.  Does this movie actually deserve the hate it gets?  Epically when it’s way better than the 2015 Fantastic 4.  However, this movies does have its flaws such as reducing Sue Storm to mere eye candy when she’s not even that kind of character in the comics.  Jake would sell out Anthony & Cody to be with Jessica Alba.  Why is this Dr. Doom just Electro from Amazing Spider-Man 2?  This movie does have a banger soundtrack. Is there a cool way to do Mr. Fantastic’s powers?  Once the movie starts to find its footing it ends.  Is it past time we discuss the Thomas Jane Punisher?  The cheesy vibe of the movie matches the energy of FF.  Should Reed Richards be called Mr. Cucktastic?  The Fantastic 4 is really a reflection of the dynamic of us on the podcast.  Camp Nowhere is a 90’s classic that gave one of the us our earliest boners.  Tune in today to find out who!
