June 15th is designated conscious consumer day. On this day we ask you to wear purple as a reminder to be financially mindful. All too often people spend for the wrong reasons. These are so many cultural standards that we try to meet and in the process create debt for ourselves.  Never stopping for a moment to question, why?  Do I really need to prove to my neighbors, colleagues, friends and or family that I am worthy because I can buy designer brands.  Will spending that extra $90,000 to get the luxury car really make you happy when it puts you further into debt? Is keeping up appearances more important than common sense and logic?

If you can afford to buy whatever you want and not left in crippling debt, by all means go right ahead. However, you really have to think long and hard when you try to portray a lifestyle that you can’t afford.  You may get the temporary pleasure of proving to the world that you are worthy, but in reality not only do you feel like a fraud in the process, but you are actually hurting yourself mentally and financially.  Sand castles don’t last.

On the surface finance might seem like a simple case of numbers, in reality the numbers are just the tip of the iceberg. It is what lurks below that drives you more than you’re willing to examine or even admit.  Why do you feel you need to have things that will invariably cause a financial strain on you and your family?  Debt is not pleasant and it can be avoided, but it will require some exploration between what you think you need and what you really need. This will be the hardest part of the process because when you start down that rabbit hole you’ll soon realize that there are many more twists and turns that you really never could have anticipated. It will be a bumpy ride, but financial peace of mind awaits you on the other side.

Let June 15th, be the day that you start taking real control of your spending, don’t be a puppet of society, marketers and values that are not true to you.

TKS focuses on teaching children the appropriate behavioural traits that are necessary for effective money management as they grow older.  Her most recent children’s book is called The Simpletons of Krafanof (TSK). This is a story which encourages children to question the world around them. Not because something is generally accepted mean that it’s true. Even though TKS and TSK seems to be very different they actually complement each other. TKS focuses on the practicality of daily living while TSK encourages children to question and think outside the box to find better and more authentic ways of doing things.

The back story of a Mustang turned Maverick:Graduating from Western and obtaining my CA with PwC, I established my career in Finance & Accounting before getting into the recruiting industry in April 2006. I worked for fantastic Tier-1 companies in the Consumer Packaged Goods industry before moving into the fascinating world of Pharmaceuticals & Biotech. I had some wonderful Managers and amazing peers & staff. I supported various functions within the organizations I worked for and found myself gravitating beyond the “debits & credits” to roles that involved supporting the business. That is where I found my sweet spot. I combined my strengths of analytical & creative thinking and problem solving with relationship building, communication and leadership to create the perfect fit for my career. So of course I changed careers...I had never been in a “Sales” role before, but thought I was well suited for the new challenge as I can be a competitive, results-oriented person. That is why I love golf so much. It is an incredibly taxing individual sport, but you have a strong team behind you to help you succeed. WOW! I have learned a lot about myself that I may not have learned had I stayed solely in Finance. I am very grateful for the opportunities both careers have brought to my life. This UNIQUE perspective both as a former candidate and a former hiring manager, allows me to bring my “passion for people” to the table every day to create solutions & add value.I have been privileged to be part of 2 organizations in the recruiting industry; one that was fairly well-established when I arrived. The other, a company I helped start and was part of the transformation into a market leader until my departure in June 2015 to create Maverick Consulting Group. This was another new chapter for me and I have been having the time of my life with more AWESOME things to come!! I inspire others with my story and work hard to make good things happen for you! #Maverick
