Prof. Fred Piper looks at some of the significant changes that have taken place in cryptography since the Second World War.

The discussion concentrates upon the effect of the advent of digital computers, the changing attitude of governments and the advent of the Internet. In particular it examines cryptography's importance to our ‘everyday lives’.

While much focus in cyber security is drawn towards technical aspects, it is increasingly recognised that technology cannot be fully effective without also addressing human aspects.

Steven Furnell explores these themes, using examples of user-facing technical controls to show how things have evolved to the present and how they should be positioned for the future.

Whose job is it to make it safe, secure and resilient anyway? We all have a part to play, whether as a user, engineer, lawyer, teacher, diplomat or politician.
