Sonya left a message in my facebook group today expressing her frustration with a lead generation company she'd paid at least a thousand dollars into that didn't yield any good results - not even ONE good result!

You ever say to yourself "I know I should be doing this thing, but I just can get myself to do it!"? I have good news and bad news for you. Last weekend I spoke at the Washington State Bar Association Solo/Small Firm Annual Conference about alternative fee arrangements.

I got peppered by law firm owners just like you for an hour about everything related to setting great fees, collecting great fees, and doing it in a way that makes clients, and lawyers, happy.

Here are a few of the takeaways.

The billable hour sucks because as you get better at what you do (i.e. more efficient) you make LESS money.

The billable hour sucks because it sets up a confrontational relationship with clients.

The billable hour sucks because it chains you to your desk, for LIFE.

It's possible to do flat fee arrangements with litigation, if you a la carte it, adjusting your fee as you go and get a feel for the complexity and involvement of the specific case.

The important psychological thing to remember is that you don't have to get it right every time. No single case is going to make or break you. Just do your best!

This weekend I attended a mastermind meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was an experience unlike any other I'd ever had, mostly because it involved a lot more personal emotion than many others.

I talk a lot about the experience in addition to the five lessons I learned. These lessons are critical to starting a law firm and growing a law firm and creating your perfect life.

Here are the five lessons:

1. If you're struggling in one thing it effects everything.

2. You are going to be tested on how much you want something.

3. We're all lying to ourselves, and it's those lies that hold us back (and need to be dealt with head on).

4. Buzzwords without action mean nothing.

5. To execute a plan efficiently and effectively you MUST address the problem right in front of you.
