After her daughter calls in a care emergency, Kimberly Whiter is forced to choose between her career and caring for the father of her children, who experienced a life-threatening health incident. Kimberly Whiter is the CEO and owner of Elder Care Solutions, a caregiver mentor, and the founder of the first caregiving colloquium. She is passionate about preventing the financial crisis millions of families face in long-term care and has experienced her caregiving journey through her daughter's early morning call.

Kimberly Whiter was accustomed to juggling work and motherhood, but she was suddenly thrust into a caretaker role when her daughter called her in a panic one morning. Her ex-husband had suffered a life-threatening seizure, and Kimberly had to drop everything to rush to his side. After a brain tumor was discovered, Kimberly had to manage her own emotions and those of her two daughters while navigating the medical and care economy. With strong antiseizure medications, a risky surgery, and chemotherapy, Kimberly managed to support her ex-husband and daughters, all while running a business as CEO. By the time COVID hit, her daughters were with her full-time, but her support systems had all fallen away. Most would want to throw in the towel but anyone who knows Kim knows that ”quit” isn’t in her vocabulary.

In this episode, we’re talking with Consuela Marshall, who supported her mother, alongside her siblings, for years before she eventually went and moved her into a small, assisted living home.  But this wasn’t just any home!  It was an assisted living home that she started in preparation for her mother’s eventual move. 

Consuela talks with the sisters about her experience caring for her mother, locally to long-distance and everything in between. At times, emotions were high as her mother would ask for another sibling to serve as her primary caregiver.  Feelings of rejection would creep in but over time, 

Consuela realized it was she herself that was for those feelings to impact caregiver experience and relationship.  She decided to take back control and shifted her thinking as she knew this was what God had called her to do.  And she shares, “When He calls, you gotta figure out how to make it work”.  And well….that’s the truth!

Bonnie Chavez was born and raised in a small town in Southern New Mexico.  She was the first in her family to receive degrees and is now the CEO and Founder of Building Beloved Communities, a business consulting firm providing community-centered business solutions.

As a Latina woman who values family, roots, heritage, and culture; Bonnie was confident she would care for her parents as they aged.  But when they decided to sell her childhood home and move to Virginia, that was a big surprise! One day she was buying a house in Roanoke and it seemed like only the next her parents were selling their home in New Mexico and moving in!

Have you ever said to yourself, “Who’s got time for cancer when there’s so much work to do?”  

In this episode we’re talking with middle sister Natalie Elliott Handy, who lovingly refers to herself as “yellow mustard” to her “grey poupon” older sister, JJ.  Since childhood, Natalie has been the most outgoing and outspoken of the three sisters.  Similar to her siblings, she has a passion for serving others; having over 24 years experience working with children, families and individuals in need of mental and behavioral health services.  

Natalie talks with sisters JJ and Emilie about the day she found out her husband Jason was suspected to have cancer, an appointment she chose not to attend due to an “important” meeting.  Natalie shares how she initially thought it would be “easy to navigate the system” based on her past experiences in the healthcare field but boy was she wrong.  

Listen in as Natalie shares the blessings she and Jason experienced along the way as they navigated the highs and lows and the twists and turns of Jason’s cancer journey.  Natalie proudly talks about how she “found God” in New York City, and professes, “my husband’s cancer saved me”.  

She states, “I’ll take the daily stressors of being a CEO to that of a caregiver any day!”  But every day wasn’t really so bad as Natalie goes on to share how she found glimmers of hope in the support she received from family, friends and through the kindness of strangers.  Trust us, you’ll be shocked at the number of times one person can go to Trader Joe’s and Morton Williams grocery store in one day!  But hey, everyone’s got their “go to” strategies for staying sane!

J.J. Elliott Hill trained for a career in finance, working over 17 years consulting with business and commercial clients. In March 2013, she found herself downsized, jobless and disinterested in furthering a career in banking. Following a few months of self-pity, she partnered up full time with her fiancé to turn their basement hobby shop into a retail store in Greensboro, NC. By November 2013 she was selling Nemo and Dory for a living! Over the next 4 years, the business grew from a small, rented space to a 10,000sq ft building purchased to operate the aquarium retail, service, and custom design company. 

She spent the next 12 years as a managing partner for the retail and service company, along with a manufacturing start-up, two residential rental companies, and a commercial real estate company – all at the same time. In August 2022, the aquarium retail store was sold and a new business in wholesale fish collection was opened in Florida.  

J.J. received her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Hollins College and her Master of Business Administration in Executive Management Studies from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She is a candidate for the CCC, CCE and CCF Certificates from The Caregiving Years Academy in December 2022. 

She calls home base the Florida Keys with her husband Dexter and their dog, Oscar. But much of her heart is in North Carolina with grandsons, Eli & Tommy.

In this episode we’re talking with Laurette Foggini, a daughter, sister, caregiver and so much more.  Laurette Foggini has worked in eldercare for 14 years assisting 100’s of families throughout Northern California.  Her qualifications and certifications are numerous and include Certified Care Manager, Certified Senior Advisor, Senior Fitness Specialist.  But with all the professional experience, Laurette says she has learned more during her personal caregiving experience than in the 14 years of caring for others

Have you ever thought, “How can anyone do this alone?  There’s got to be a better way!”  

In this episode we’re talking with Mike George, a father, husband and caregiver, who shares how he and his wife recognized they had to create a way to support their son with disabilities and be there for their children and themselves. And that’s what they did!  

Over time, using their caregiver support formula, they’ve grown Ben’s support team to a group of six employed professionals who allow all members of the family to do more than just exist but to experience a true quality of life!  

The sisters talk with Mike about how he helps family caregivers go from feeling alone, fearful, and uncertain to becoming confident, empowered champions.  He knows the road well… He has been a caregiver for 30 years. 

His caregiving journey began in June of 1992, with the birth of his third child, Ben. An hour after he was born, Mike and his wife were told Ben was very sick and may not live the day. 

BUT Spoiler alert - BEN did survive and learn to walk with lots of support. He uses a communication device to speak, and in 2019 became a university graduate..
