JJ, Natalie, and Emilie are sisters who have provided caregiving, either local or long-distance, to their mother since 2011. After a medical crisis in 2019, they realized that their mother could no longer live independently and have since been on a caregiving rollercoaster, having moved their mother five separate times in four years.
The sisters never expected to be caregivers for their mother, but then again, most never do. Just when they thought their problems would lessen by moving their mom in with sister Emilie, they only just began. Listen in as the sisters provide an update on their caregiving journey, one that ultimately resulted in the decision no adult child wants to make - placing their mother in a skilled nursing community.
"You go into this with good intentions. In our mind, we thought if she could get the duopa pump she could easily live in the community. Then Emilie could work, and life would go on like normal. We would later recognize our reluctance to accept the truth. Her Parkinson’s Disease had progressed to the point that no medication could supplement the support she truly needed."
In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. How the sisters would move their mom from setting to setting only to realize there were no “perfect” options.
2. The lessons learned from each placement.
3. How they finally accepted the truth and made the gut-wrenching decision to place her in a skilled nursing community.
