Veronica Agard (Ifáṣadùn Fásanmí) (she/her) is a poet, writer, community educator, and connector at the intersections of Black identity, wellness, representation, and culture. She experiments with creative healing modalities and puts theories learned into practice. She curated the Who Heals the Healer series and the conference of the same name and facilitates the Ancestors in Training educational project. Cynthia and Irisneri talk about  how leaving another life behind to live in their purpose has become a deep life's work. Irisneri shares stories of her love of Puerto Rico, and how she always remembers feeling "Puerto Rico means freedom to me," and how this calling for la isla is still with her and pours into her work with clients looking to uncover old family secrets. Irisnei is a gift to this mission with a wealth of knowledge and a fierce passion for truth. She is like the Mary Poppins of genealogy work. 

Irisneri's bio:
Like many Professional Genealogists, Irisneri got started with her own family. After a lifetime of love for history and listening to the stories of her maternal Abuelitos, growing up in the 1940s in Puerto Rico and then their experiences when they moved the New York City in the 1950s, she decided it was time to start the search. That is how her journey started, expanding more on her maternal side and helping her grandfather find answers about the father he lost when he was four years old. To meeting through documents her paternal grandparents whom she never got to know. She finally understood more about her paternal side and was able to empathize with her father in a way she never had before. She learned more about the history of her island of Puerto Rico that you don’t always find in schoolbooks. Then she shared and saw the gift of watching someone connect with their ancestors and heal through this knowledge. That is when her mission and dream was born, now Irisneri dedicates her life to help others connect with their ancestors, empower and help them heal through the knowledge of their family history.

In this episode we talk to Christy Fredrick who went back to school in the pandemic to pursue a degree in Chicano Studies and found community and compassion for her lineage and her journey. Christy shares her experience growing up in an evangelical home and the pressure to assimilate as a Brown girl in a white church. Christy and Cynthia talk about breaking generational patterns and learning grace for themselves from their children. 


Christy is a senior at the University of New Mexico and a Chicanx Studies major. She is a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Research Fellow and her research focuses on Chicanas in the Evangelical Church. She currently lives in Albuquerque with her partner and their three kids.

When Cynthia met Robin she was literally in the sandbox and since then they have found comfort in their talks that are vulnerable and brave AF. Robin and Cynthia talk about moving out of their people pleaser era and into their authentic lives! They talk all things motherhood, workplace burnout, and letting go of limiting beliefs! 

Robin Cortez is the Senior Program Director of Fitness for a local YMCA. She received her Master of Science at the University of Utah in Exercise & Sport Science. She has studied yoga in Rishikesh, India and has a bachelor’s degree in Theology & Religious Studies along with having dual-minored in Philosophy and Spanish while at the University of San Diego. She’s taught countless industry professionals how to be personal trainers, group fitness instructors and the best kinds of leaders in their trade. Her passion for being active combined with her love of teaching have led her to a multifaceted career of simply helping others realize their deeper potential. She considers herself a lifelong student and cherishes time with her family.
