The State of Pennsylvania has closed schools until at least April 6, but the shutdown could last longer as COVID-19 continues to spread.

To that end, the Brockway Area School District has decided to join other districts in the area and provide some educational opportunities for its students.

Brockway’s plan allows students and teachers to develop activities that expand on the students’ educational experiences, but the work is not mandatory for students co complete. The high school would develop these lessons online using Google Classroom, but any student who does not have reliable internet can request packets to be printed out for pick-up at the school. The elementary school is developing packets specific to each grade level.

Teachers will be available by phone or email, or even video chat, to assist students during regular school hours. They are maintaining logs of who they contact and what they work on.

Superintendent Jeff Vizza said that this is an unprecedented event, but the dedication of the staff and the buy-in from the students and parents can make this a success.

As senior citizens are particularly at risk for COVID-19, the Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging is still providing advice and services to older residents who need it.

They are still delivering Meals on Wheels. Not only does this provide local seniors with a nutritious meal each day, but volunteers and drivers can check in with senior they deliver to and make sure they are staying safe and healthy during the coronavirus pandemic.

You can do your part by checking in on a friend, neighbor, or family member and see if they need anything. A quick phone call can also make a big difference for someone who is feeling isolated.

Centers for Active Living in Clearfield County are closed for the time being. CCAAA employees are not allowing people in the office, but they are taking phone calls.

Superintendent Jeff Vizza presented senior Anthony Glasl with a plaque honoring him as the current record holder for Brockway wrestling wins. Vizza praised Glasl, who is also a student representative for the school board.

Aegis Cofee Roasters, Brady Street Florist, CORE Psychiatric & Psychological Services, Lily's Grab n Go, and the North Central PA LaunchBox are teaming up with the DuBois Chamber on Wednesday, March 11 from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. for a Chamber Mixer!

It'll be a tour of all five businesses/organizations, with light refreshments provided at each stop.

Over the weekend, the Rotary Radio Auction broke an all-time record and raised more than $36,000!

This includes DuBois Area United Way, Reitz Theater, Special Olympics, American Red Cross, DuBois Free Medical Clinic, Girls Scouts of America, Bucktail Council, the DuBois Public Library and many other worthy causes.
