Throughout the week, law enforcement throughout Pennsylvania was honored during Police Week.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.

Senator Jay Costa, himself a former Allegheny County Sheriff’s Deputy, co-sponsored a Senate Resolution marking the week, which calls on citizens of the Commonwealth to honor police officers who gave their all in the line of duty. He says the families of those officers also deserve our respect and support.

It’s called “The Wall That Heals”… The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) travels to communities throughout the United States with a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Named The Wall That Heals, it has been displayed at nearly 600 communities throughout the nation.

The VVMF says the traveling exhibit provides thousands of veterans who have been unable to make the trip to Washington, or who have a hard time coping with the prospect of facing The Wall, to find the strength and courage to do so within their own communities, thus allowing the healing process to begin.

Senator Andy Dinniman arranged for veterans from the Coatsville Veterans Hospital, some of whom are Vietnam War veterans, to visit the wall. He shares some of their stories and the meaning behind the wall.
