Much of God’s Word has both a surface meaning as well as a symbolic meaning. On the surface, God is teaching us a story about great faith and how God tests our faith. Yet there is also a symbolic meaning in that God is foreshadowing Jesus Christ through this story. Mount Moriah would later become Mount Calvary. The Bible says that the gospel was “preached unto Abraham.” Jesus later said, “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” Abraham got a firsthand lesson from the Master Teacher Himself about Christ, Calvary, and the cross. One commentator called this chapter, “A dress rehearsal for Calvary.”
