John 3:16 has been referred to as the “scarlet thread” that connects the entire message of the Bible together. It may also be described as the grand prize of Easter. It is by far the most famous verse of Scripture. No other verse in the Bible is more widely referenced than this one.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

This verse has 25 words. The first 12 words deal directly with God with the last 12 words dealing directly with man. The one word in the middle is the word “Son.” Jesus Christ is the one who divides that verse into two parts.

Today, we are taking a “detour” from our Route 66 series to celebrate Palm Sunday and the upcoming Good Friday. What is so good about Good Friday? It certainly wasn’t good for Jesus, but the benefits of the cross towards us changes everything. 

Hebrews 12:2 says, “We must keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete. He endured the shame of being nailed to a cross, because he knew later on he would be glad he did.”

There are certain “death benefits” that Jesus paid for us when He went to the cross. If you don’t know what those benefits are, you’re going to miss out on all that God intended for your life. There are really 50 benefits of the cross in the Bible, but today we’ll focus on just three of them.

Samson was a hero who quickly turned into a zero. As you look at Samson, you begin to see him as a tragedy of what might have been. He was a man who was, literally, leveled by lust.

Let’s look at how Samson started his life. The Bible says in Judges 13:24, “So the woman bore a son and called his name Samson, and the child grew and the Lord blessed him.”

Judges 13:25, “And the spirit of the Lord began to move upon him (talking about Samson) at Mahaneh Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.”

God had a purpose for Samson. Yet, Satan notices bright spots for God and starts to work on putting out the light.

Today, in our Route 66 Bible reading plan, we are in the passage of Scripture where God gives Moses the 10 Commandments. 

The third commandment is this: Exodus 20:7 says, “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.”

Unfortunately in the church today, this commandment has been dumbed down. The worst sin in the Bible is committing evil in God’s name. This is the only one of the Ten Commandments that states that God will not forgive a person who violates the commandment. The Hebrew original does not say “Do not take.” The Hebrew literally reads, “Do not carry the name of the Lord thy God in vain.” What does it mean to carry, or to misuse God’s name? It means committing evil in God’s name and that God will not forgive. Why not? Because when a “religious” person commits evil in God’s name, it brings God and religion into disrepute. That’s why the greatest sin is religious evil.

Today, we’ll look at how we fully honor this third commandment and the implications of God’s most holy name.

God is working like you wouldn't believe it. Today, there are over 12,000 churches in the Indian town Dr. Gupta calls home, a town that once only had about 500 churches in the 1980's. This kind of growth is happening (this Gospel growth) in countries/continents all over the world: Asia, South America, and more! The church is growing!
