Every person I speak to has his or her own unique story of when and how this pandemic hit them, and each is so distinctly beautiful and different. So in this Connection thru Chaos series, I want to give people the chance to share their firsthand accounts. In this episode, we’ll hear from one of my favorite people on the entire planet, Ms. Sarah Howard.
Sarah is a Sustainable Living Coach and primarily teaches sustainable living to empower her clients to take control of their food, take control of their pockets and ultimately become self-reliant.
Her experience as the pandemic was starting to unfold is a bit different than others’ accounts I’ve shared so far. The situation didn’t really hit Sarah at first and it took a while before everything started to sink in. She remembers feeling disbelief when she went to the grocery store for the first time and saw nearly empty shelves where essential products like toilet paper, canned and boxed food and even cleaning supplies usually sat. After having a mini panic attack right then, Sarah realized she had to work to keep herself from taking on the same panic and fear everyone else was feeling.
As she slowly stopped having such a lack mentality, Sarah started to be grateful for the benefits of her sustainable lifestyle. She realized that the empty shelves didn’t affect her as much since she already knew how to come up with alternatives for toilet paper, for example, and already had tons of canned fruits and veggies on-hand.
This is why now is the perfect time to consider adopting Sarah’s program of sustainable living. Sustainable living allows you to rely more on yourself to repurpose things or grow food, for example, than to rely on a grocery store, retailer or other people. You achieve greater independence by honing your existing skills and learning new ones.
So if you’re ready to get involved with sustainable living, find something that you’re interested in and just try it. Keep in mind that this will be a learning situation, so it’s OK if you make mistakes or even fail. You will learn from those experiences in the long run. That’s why sustainable living is one great answer to the common question: “How can I get more prepared if a crisis like this happens again in the future?”
The hard truth is, sh*tty situations happen in life, but we can empower ourselves to be more prepared when they do. So I encourage you to start trying new things now. If you encounter an obstacle or an energy block, rest, allow yourself time to process things, and then get back at it when you can.
