This week I was honored to sit down with cognitive-behavioral psychotherapist and author of How to Think Like a Roman Emperor: The Stoic Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius, Donald Robertson. Stoicism has played a big part in my life over the past couple years and Donald’s book was part of my initial introduction into the philosophy. The book is a detailed account of my personal favorite Stoic philosopher’s life, Marcus Aurelius. Donald and I discuss how Stoicism guided Marcus’s everyday life as a Roman Emperor and why the philosophy is equally relevant now as it was over 2000 years ago. I had a great time speaking with Donald and can’t recommend his book enough. Be sure to check out Donald’s LinkedIn page https://www.linkedin.com/in/donaldjrobertson/ or his website https://donaldrobertson.name/

This week I sat down with former Navy SEAL Adam Wright from Field Trip Health, the world’s first integrated company in legal psychedelics. Adam heads Field Trip’s veterans division, where he and his team pair veterans with psychedelic therapy to help treat mental health issues related to PTSD. Adam and I discuss the benefits of and science behind Field Trip’s PTSD treatment, a Ketamine assisted psychotherapy administered by specially trained psychotherapist. We dive deep into the stigma associated with psychedelics and how that stigma is rapidly changing with the help of recent studies using psychedelics, as well as books like Michael Pollan’s How to Change Your Mind. It was a pleasure sitting down with Adam to talk about the groundbreaking work being done at Field Trip Health and some of the exciting things still yet to come. As a huge fan of cycling, I’m extremely excited to welcome to the podcast a man who’s considered one of the greatest cyclists of all time, Sean Kelly. Sean has won 193 professional bike races and was ranked the top cyclist in the world five years running. His victories include the Vuelta a Espana, Paris-Roubaix twice, Tour de Suisse, and five stages in the Tour de France. Sean and I discuss his rise from a small farming town in Ireland to eventually reaching the pinnacle of the sport. We also discuss his post cycling career, which includes commentating for Eurosport and most recently his involvement in developing the IndoorVelo Screen Mount. This system allows indoor cyclists the ability to mount their laptop, tablet or phone onto their handlebars using the IndoorVelo mounting bracket. This is perfect for indoor cyclists using software platforms like Zwift. To see more about IndoorVelo check-out www.indoorvelo.com

On this week’s episode I got to sit down with Josh Duntz to discuss the amazing work he and his team at Stasis are doing using the power of breathwork. We discuss why breathwork has gained so much recent notoriety and the science behind the practice. Josh initially developed his passion for breathwork while serving in the Navy as a member of the special operations community. As Josh transitioned out of the military he founded Stasis as a way to share the benefits of breathwork in the field of human performance and as a way to improve mental health and sleep. After Covid-19 hit, he and the team at Stasis started using breathwork to help patients recover and improve lingering respiratory effects related to the virus. Be sure to check out the work Josh and his team are doing at https://stasisperformance.com/.

This is a big one ladies and gentleman! In this weeks’ episode I have the privilege of sitting down with Bill Shufelt, the visionary and co-founder behind Athletic Brewing Company. Bill and the team at ABC have flipped the script on what it means to drink non-alcoholic beer. In our conversation Bill discusses how the seeds of ABC were sewn by his love of great beer, and the realization that alcohol was personally and professionally preventing him from being the best version of himself. So, he did what visionaries do; he recognized an opportunity and despite the risk and uncertainty, he seized it! Bill describes how we quit his job and went all in on his dream to revolutionize the world of NA beer. He talks about the trials and tribulations along the way, and the incredible things that ABC is doing to give back the community. I was truly inspired by Bills story and it was an absolute pleasure to have him on the podcast. This week I had an awesome conversation with Elaine and Heath Brewer from Humble Warrior Wellness. These two have established a Wellness Center that incorporates yoga, meditation and other relevant methods of integrative and holistic therapies to help veterans and first responders deal with the inevitable stressors associated with their jobs.
Heath is a combat veteran, deployed 12 times as a Navy Explosive Ordinance Disposal Technician and was completely unaware of the mental toll his time in service had caused. Only after attending a life-changing intensive outpatient program at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), a specialized branch of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, did he and Elaine become aware of the massive benefits of meditation, yoga, and other mindfulness techniques.
Elaine is a 15yr military spouse. After witnessing so much trauma and loss within Heath’s military unit, she decided to shift her focus from physical health to mental health resilience and founded the Humble Warrior Wellness Nonprofit. Since then, these two have been committed to building a facility that enables both veterans and first responders to reap the benefits of holistic therapies. Happy New Year! This week’s guest, Jesse Simpson, is a guy who on the surface seemed to be kicking ass in life. After his enlistment in the Marine Corp Jesse landed his dream job as a firefighter, eventually being named Arizona Firefighter of the Year in 2017. He had a great girlfriend, his dream job, and on all accounts should have been a happy guy. Except his history of anger, anxiety, PTSD and substance abuse, eventually caught up with him and broke him down. So, Jesse took drastic actions and made a substantial change in his life. He not only left his dream job as a firefighter, he left the country and started performing service work in Peru and backpacking in Costa Rica. He embarked in a massive adventure and learned the importance of living for others. Since then, Jesse has founded Action-Oriented, a company that helps other break the cycle of feeling overworked, overwhelmed, and feeling like the best part of their lives has passed by. Happy Holidays everyone! I switch it up a bit this week and have a couple laughs on the show. This week we sit down with nationally headlining comedian and host of The Commissioner of Comedy Podcast, James Mattern. I invited James on the podcast for a couple reasons, first he’s a very funny comedian who I had the privilege of opening for a couple years ago, and second because I wanted to know how he’s kept such a positive mindset through the Covid-19 craziness that’s laid havoc to the comedy industry. We discuss his daily habits, bombing on stage, and using comedy to mask emotional pain. If you want to hear more from James be sure to check him out at thejamesmattern on Instagram and Thejamesmattern on Twitter.
