Contagion Effect

What great stories George Retana had to share with us this week. George, a Marine Corp Veteran, husband, father of 4(girl dad), survivor (listen to learn more), college student, and President/Chaplain of Veterans in Action Inc. We learned of his life growing up where he had to overcome some major hurdles, to his two tours in Iraq where his life was on the line multiple times. George was very transparent in sharing many of his mental health struggles while still in the Marines and when he first got out. Learned about Veterans in Action Inc., and how they are out to create a community for other veterans to fight veteran suicide, and help others where needed. Watch/Listen to learn more.

Sometimes doing a Live Show can be a blessing, and sometimes it can hurt. We try to make sure it is always a blessing. So when we have a guest no show us, we adapt and overcome. This week you got us. It has been a rocky week leading up to this show, so this is what we most likely needed. We started out with some big losses of some true heroes at the beginning of the week. First Alan Taylor a WWII Navy Veteran who we had the pleasure of meeting with Duke Cooper of American Veterans First. Alan told some great stories of his times during WWII. He passed away at 98 years old.

US Navy Veteran Jenna Carlton joined us this week. Jenna walked us through her time growing up in Wisconsin to why she decided to join the Navy. We learned about how she went from a very small town to being deployed on to an aircraft carrier. Jenna shared a little about life on an aircraft carrier and some of the ports they visited while deployed. Spoke about her decision to leave the Navy and now go to school. This is where she thought she thought she wanted to be in politics, but learned, that wasn't going to be the life for her. This is where she reconnected with serving and specifically serving her fellow veterans. At this time, some friends and her created The Millennial Veteran Facebook Group. A group where veterans could have a safe space to talk with other veterans and even find help. Jenna also launched her Podcast Vet Chats, where she has other veterans on to share their stories. Last, we learned how her book "The Veteran Workbook" came to be. This book as been used on our show with some other veterans and is a great resource to reflect on their previous service and keep them grounded. We had a great time with Jenna, click to watch/listen.

If you are a veteran and want to be part of a group that understands what you are going through here is the Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/themillennialveterans

Some of the pain of doing a Live Show is that life happens, unfortunately our scheduled guest couldn't make it. We adapted and overcame. We started with Mike's Grandson joining while his son and wife were at the park.

We moved over to Todd Hawks a Marine Corp Veteran who tried to join us, unfortunately the internet was not working great. We will get Todd back to share his story. We did share a bit about Hawks Woodworking which is linked below. He makes hand crafted Flags that are beautiful.

We than had another great returning guest with Chris Whittemore who shared what he has been doing since last being on the show 8 months ago. He has written another book which we have linked below. He is also working for his County helping Veterans get their VA benefits.

Come watch/listen to Eddie Andersen a Marine Corp Veteran who started a great organization, Tackle 22 Fishing. We had the opportunity to learn what made him join the Marine Corp, along with his not so normal journey through Boot Camp. Eddie shared how he was deployed and found a love for being in the middle of everything. Deployment became what he wanted, so when he was looking to re enlist and the Marine Corp was only offering recruiting duty, he felt it was time to leave. He ended up working for a private contractor out of country for a few years. After all that, going back to civilian life was not easy and Eddie shares some really great stories on that. Told the story of how Tackle 22 Fishing really came to life, and how fishing saved his. Tackle 22 Fishing is growing and looking for more volunteers, especially on the Western half of the United States. If you have a love of fishing and want to share that with a veteran or someone that just needs something to do outside. Reach out to Eddie and Tackle 22 Fishing.

We had the opportunity to speak with Mark E. Petersen and Andrea Eichmann from The People's Patriot Project this week. Both Mark and Andrea shared a bit about their lives growing up which both culminated in them becoming Teachers and meeting at a Teachers Conference. We were able to learn how The People's Patriot Project came to be. an organization that helps both Veterans and First Responders. They help provide resources to those who need it. They also have a Podcast called the We Got Your 6 @ 6, the link is below to their YouTube channel. Go check out everything they are doing and support.

Amanda Huffman, a, Air Force veteran turned Mom and Author joined us this week. We learned about her journey to joining the Air Force. One not like the many we have heard. Not a lot of family members had previously been in the military. She gained her knowledge through what happened during 9/11. While in College she made the decision that she wanted to join. Due to a conversation with a friend took a longer journey to get there, but ended up becoming a Civil Engineer in the Air Force. Amanda shared some stories about her 9 month deployed in Afghanistan and some of her experiences there. Her becoming a mother led her to ultimately stepping away from her military service. After being out she felt she needed to do more, which compelled her to start her podcast and talking to female veterans about their stories. That turned in to a book called "Women of the Military". She has also written a book that empowers young women on giving them the facts of joining the military, and everything surrounding that decision.

This week we had to change things up a bit. Eric took the controls and and had some of our previous guests/new family on. Eric spoke with Bryan Roof from the Every Day is Saturday Podcast and Gun Room Radio, Derek Thompson with the Shadow Mark Podcast and even our good friend Tonto who we met through Warriors and Rodeo. Check all their links below. The guys spoke about mental health and music along with a whole lot more. There might even be a musical performance.

On this weeks Episode of The Contagion Effect, we were joined by Chris "Preach" Kniss with Doose Outfitters Ministry. Chris is an Air Force Veteran who grew up in Nebraska and ended up back there to settle his roots. Chris shared his time in Law Enforcement and working on different ranches after being medically retired from the Air Force. Preach told us how him and Ms J(his wife) came to start Doose Outfitters Ministry. Now they are doing amazing things through their ministry, like guiding hunts for veterans. They are also currently raising money to hopefully purchase an equine facility to offer Equine therapy along with larger events and even hunting on the property. They are a 501(c)(3) recognized non-profit, and need our support to complete their mission. Every dollar counts. Please watch/listen to learn more.

Jason Rhodes was our guest this week. Come watch/listen to this US Navy Veteran share his story. Jason didn't have the normal path to joining the military, but it is a great story. We learned about his time in the Gulf outside of Iraq, and also that he worked to different Destroyers. Both of which he also helped de commission. His transition in to civilian life was not necessarily easy, but he found his place and worked through it. this is what led hime to start his non-profit RenoVet. Where he helps disabled veterans renovate their homes to fit their needs. In order to help raise funds for RenoVet, Jason decided to walk from Sanford, North Carolina to Austin, Texas. Along the way he documented his travels through his social media. This walk was almost 1400 miles and he just did with himself and a Ruck sack. You need to hear some of these stories on his adventure.
