So this is one question that I wanted to ask you. So is that do you have a topic that you never spoke about in a podcast or an interview and you would love to speak about or just maybe it's a statement or something that you truly want to share with the world.

Is there something? Oh, that's a tough one, because yeah, I'm trying just come through, like all of the conversations I've had when it comes to marketing and thinking about where that comes to be. And I would say that the biggest I would say something that I haven't shared a lot is thinking about marketing.

Especially from a startup context is that marketing can't just live in our own bubble of just creating content. Marketing needs to be embedded in a cross-functional way.

Your typical marketing person now can't just be a nontechnical person that just writes content. But sometimes, especially in my world, where it's in a technology company, you have to be able to interact with engineers, product designers, and you also have to be able to interact.

So you as head of marketing. You're also looking for trends and I'm sure checking all-new tools and things. Do you have a structure or no other questions?

What trends do you see when it comes to marketing to digital marketing? Yes, I think when it comes to digital marketing, this might be a little more like away from, like your traditional like SEO, sem and digital display. But I think there's a huge emphasis around two things. One is building community, but also two is, having real writers your CEO writing something or someone that is actually writing content. It's not just from a content marketing person, right?

It's really important. Authentic voices. I've been noticing that if you one trend that I've noticed in like pr and marketing is that there's a lot of journalists who have been in the traditional newsroom, they have now left those jobs to start their own newsletter now.

So I mean, this is a big thing. So I mean, feedback has this connotation. It is not that positive, but changing this connotation or this way of how people feel about it is in my opinion a big thing. So how do you market?

How do you think strategically about the marketing process? So and and also the execution, I mean I mean, this is a big task.

It is. It is. And we can't change it overnight. We can only change it through conceded efforts of concerted efforts of helping people to normalize that feedback isn't something that when you hear about like sometimes, you know, you have a cold sweat hearing that you got feedback, right or you're about to be pulling for a call. How do we change that culture?

And I think one of the biggest way that we're gonna be focused in 2021 is really making it more of a habit and a ritual where if you constantly always get feedback both positive and constructive, you're going to start believing that.

So when I get feedback is like a gift. I'm actually delighted to see it. And for us, is really about creating content that speak to our users. So one of the things that our team is still fairly scrappy and small where team of 13 so the marketing team is myself and two other people, right? So it's still a very small team. And we don't have the multi million dollar budget that we would have, you know, at apple, right? And so we have to think about what are ways we could bring people into our door. And a lot of that is through, like, seo, building out amazing content that people might be googling for something.

  • Why we need a new feedback culture!

👉  Good feedback helps us to grow! The sad thing is we don’t know how to do it in the right way

👉  Establish a feedback Friday day where you the whole team gives feedback

👉  Make giving and receiving feedback a habit within your company

So you are also head of marketing on matter. So you described matter. I'm not sure if I really got it. So do you. I mean, giving feedback on a professional way.

But are these things, digital products or do you go to these companies and help them with the professional feedback? Can you explain it in a more detailed way?

Yeah. So we are a saas solution, which is software as a service and a digital platform. You have your team. Your peers is 360 degree feedback.

Right? Feedback isn't just top down, but also bottom off as well, right. If you are an employee, you can ask feedback among your peers, right. Your co-workers.

But you also can ask feedback to your manager. But even if you're a manager, you should also be asking feedback from your team as well, right? It's not just, top down where manager only gets feedback from their manager. Right for us, we want to build a an environment where people can thrive when they see that they got feedback, right? I think for me, I always see that feedback is a gift because throughout my career.

It's always easier to give someone positive feedback. But it's very hard to give someone constructive feedback, primarily because we either are a little bit scared to confront someone with, like feedback. That might not be too positive.

So it just to have a feeling how are you and what are the steps that you are going? What are the workflows that you do when you create pieces for Forbes?

So when it comes to Forbes, I would say that you have to pick, your unique spin to what you want to write about. Like when it comes to my personal writing, you have to write something that you care about and you lived like.

If you are writing about a certain product like an industry, then you probably need to love that industry because that means that you not only write about it, but you also follow people in that industry.

Right for me is you gotta find where that is. Is that on Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok.

Yeah, so absolutely. There's no guarantee when it comes to like when it comes to earned media, just like the word earned means you have to earn their respect and trust. Right?

You may if you have a big budget, work with a very established pr agency, then a lot of that stuff is going to be established on your behave, right? That's why that you do work with an agency because they have those prior relationship right when it comes to earning media is that it is gonna be based on those relationship, but I think it's, of course, like if you're a bigger brand, you will have that cachet in the budget to find those press releases that you need but say that you're an entrepreneur is one of the best things you mentioned already Yakup is to create your own content because when you message someone, they don't just take your words that you who you are, right. They kind of probe around your LinkedIn on your website on your blog and see like they'll check out, like, see, like, who is this person that I don't know yet, right? And is this someone I want? To give a chance to is if someone I even wanna talk to write and your content marketing is kind of like I would say, it's like your portfolio that never sleeps.

But can you describe how this happened so that you became a Forbes contributor and okay, so this is the 1st question? Yeah, this happened. Yeah, so I've been a big fan of Forbes. I mean, Forbes is an international brand. We all heard about Forbes. Whether is through the Midas list or the world's richest list are also the Forbes 30 under 30 list, right? And been always, you know, really love the content that's written by their editors, but also their large network of contributors who cover a variety of topics in the industry. Right? And I got I would say, I've always wanted to be a Forbes writer, probably way back in, maybe 2011 when I was still in school. But I never thought about ever writing for them. When I see Forbes, I think about the magazine like this is like a legitimate I can see the paper.

I can see the magazine. Like, how would I ever right on their website? And I think, but, you know, over time, as I write more I was more into marketing and doing social media. I'm like, oh, you know what? Like, I have a voice I want to start sharing, but I never thought about hey, I'm gonna go share on Forbes. Com. I start writing where I had access to, right? I think that's the most important step is, if you're interested in writing for a major publication, you're gonna have to start from somewhere, right? You're not gonna your day zero is not gonna be writing on Forbes.Com your day zero might be I'm gonna start posting on medium. Com, on LinkedIn publishing or Tumblr. Or maybe if you're you know, if your, up with the trends start TikTok stories, right?

You said something very interesting. You said you work for these big companies like apple. So milion, millions of budget and also the startups for starting from scratch or solopreneurs.

So what lessons did you learn from working or seeing both sides? Are their typical lessons that you learned or things that you say well, this worked for them.

But this could also work for the solopreneur or the startup. Are there some lessons that you can share? Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I enjoy my experience at apple very dearly. I mean, you build products, you tell stories and it's heard by millions of people across.

Yeah, it does that feel like that. And I think that's what we've been taught during our new employee orientation, obviously. But at the end of the day, it does have that impact across the world and the care. The attention through every single piece of copy or even a tweet has many people looking at it right. And also, you have a lot of people behind.

A lot of these accounts, right? And I think for me when it comes to about when I look back at my days at Apple. It was always about, the attention to detail the care for every single letter syllables, punctuation in a sentence, right? And it's very slow and methodic, very process-driven, right? And looking back, you know, when I first, you know, left apple. I always felt that we were we had too many processes and things moved too slow, right?

But you know what? I think that's what it takes when you run a big company like that with tens of 1000 decentralized employees across the world, and you're really trying to sell a product message or product. A lot of that requires a lot of discipline. And how do you say consistency when you have 10 people writing about the same thing, right?
