E44 (7/3/17) Debra Keeton: Red Flags of Child Predators
In “Turn to God with Carin,” Carin Jayne Casey Carin Jayne Casey introduces Debra Keeton, her friend for several years at the House of Prayer in Virginia. Debra has been in “Totally Delivered and Free” ministry. Debra was on Casey’s podcast segment last month (6/19/17) as well.
Debra shared several ‘red flags’ to watch out for the safety of our children from child predators. These red flags are also ‘grooming’ tools for the pedophile, their efforts to win over the potential victim. Some red flags:
Gives gifts to a chosen child
May feel they have rights or ownership over that child
Physical contact – hugging, touching, sit on lap
Disregard ‘no’ & overstep boundaries
Private talks with child on social media
Offers to help take child somewhere alone (bathroom…)
Adult is known to be into pornography
A child predator, or pedophile, is not usually a stranger, but a family member or known neighbor. Predator may have been divorced and is depressed or lonely. 40% of offenders are juveniles. Rarely, predator could be a woman, or a couple.
Debra gave several preventive measures, especially to talk with your child about body safety and their rights. And, she suggests parents don’t force their child to hug another adult (i.e., an uncle). The child may even have an instinctive feeling something isn’t right with that adult. She urges us to report any inappropriate behavior and to get educated. She encourages listeners to read Psalms 121.
A few common positions a pedophile may hold are football coach or boy scout leader. Debra suggests parents reconsider placing their child on the lap of an adult in costume, such as Santa Clause, a clown, etc. A better thing would be to stand beside those is costume.
Finally, Debra shared some signs to watch for to indicate a child may have fallen victim to something/someone: pulling away from parent, bed wetting, bad grades, acting up, moodiness, disobedient, rocking, banging head, and nightmares.
