Chapter 6 of Romans is the Apostle Paul’s well known “homily” on the necessity of baptism in the terms of God’s pardon for salvation. The fact is that salvation is not a product of man’s theology, or any group of men to be the source of salvation from sinful men. In fact, as the Apostle John writes in his gospel – read John 1: 13

I. What is being “in Christ” really mean?

a. Read Rom. 6: 1-4

b. God’s ways and His thoughts are higher than ours; to be born out of Heaven by the will of God is the most profound event in our lives!

c. Sinning more or again because God has been gracious is mocking and testing god – far be this thought from anyone.

d. Yet, Christendom continues to redefine the command of the Apostle Peter on Pentecost A.D. 30 Read Acts 2:38

II. To be identified with Christ – is to be IN Christ!

a. Read Rom. 6: 5-10

b. Verse 6; “this knowing” is to know experientially, not intuitively (v. 9 &16) – The Apostles knew these things from the teaching of Jesus to them and they impart this to those that hear them.

c. Verse 10; Jesus died once for all, to live unto God.

Note; He would die “no more” (Heb. 9: 25-26). Death has no dominion over Jesus – thus none over those “In Christ”

III. Alive in Christ to God; and dead to sin

a. Read Rom. 6: 11-14

b. “So also you”, v. 11 – this is significant for the reader of this Epistle.

c. Yield yourselves to God; be instruments of righteousness – you are not under law but under Grace.

Rom 5: 1-13 Neil Woodbury

In chapter 5 we find the Apostle teaching that: being justified out of faith, we have peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ. Sometimes I wonder if the world of many Christian people have forgotten these points.

1. Apart from the blood of Christ – men live in war with the God of Heaven – lost!

2. Only through Christ and being born out of above through the will of the Father can anyone truly have peace with God.

I. Glorying in tribulations!

a. Read Rom. 5: 3-8

b. Tribulations maketh patience; patience worketh experience; experience, hope maketh not ashamed. All through the Love of God.

c. Salvation is offered to the ungodly, NOT on their terms – but through Christ alone and God’s terms of Pardon. God’s love towards mankind.

II. Saved from God’s wrath, through Christ’s blood

a. Read Rom. 5: 9-13

b. Only those covered by the Blood of Christ will be saved from God’s wrath; this is the condition of being “In Christ”.

c. Joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ!

The question was looming in the first century assemblies of Christ; were the Jews more important and better people than the Gentile world? The Apostle would answer that question to the Christians in Rome by showing that God loves all mankind, but unto the Sons of Abraham, He had made a covenant first. God is faithful and true – the Gentiles must come in faith, according to the Apostolic Gospel.

I. What of the Jews?

a. Read Rom 3: 1-9

b. The “we” are in reference to the Apostles (all Jewish men under the covenant)

II. God judges all men according to sin

a. Read Rom 3: 10-18

b. All O.T. quotes

i. 10-12; God as the Judge!

ii. 13-15; God as the Creator!

iii. 16-18; God as a Historian!

III. When there is no Fear of God

a. Read Rom 3: 19-26

b. The law brings knowledge of Sin, not redemption!
