In this 8th chapter of the Hebrew letter, the writer makes clear two things;

1. The superior nature of the New High Priest of the New Covenant

2. The superior reality of the New Covenant as compared with the Old Covenant underthe Law of Moses.

Thus – the New has fulfilled the grand promise of God’s covenant with Abraham.

Jesus – High Priest of God

Chapter 7 is a response to the Priesthood order of Melchisedek and how this pertains to Jesus of Nazareth the Christ. This was a very important point of the faith in Jesus to the Hebrew converts to Christ.

This is the proper process for the child of God – but something much worse can happen to the believer, he can turn back, becoming apostate towards the Lord and His Assembly. This we must guard against!

The statement of Christendom is “Jesus was God” or Jesus said He was God – This statement has caused much confusion to those naming Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior – and violates the Apostolic command in 1 Cor. 4: 5-6 Read

I. Delegated authority (power) is the true teaching of the passage;

a. “Exousia” is the Greek word for delegated authority – in this case given from the Father.

II. The Son of God, NOT God the Son

The New Testament writings declare Jesus Christ as the High Priest of the Assemblies of Christ. And so it is, but to understand and appreciate our High Priest today, one must understand the idea of the High Priest of the First Covenant people. It is clear that God appointed the First High Priest of the Jews – Aaron, a Levite – and His Son Jesus as the Last High Priest unto the brethren of God’s Family.

Chapter Three of the Hebrew letter proclaims Christ Jesus as the Apostle and High Priest of God – setting Jesus apart from every being in all creation as preeminent, but obedient to the Father in Heaven (John 13: 16).

Neil Woodbury Hebrews 2: 1-18

The Letter to the “Hebrews” of the first century A.D. church is simply a revelation as to who Jesus of Nazareth truly was – is – and shall always be.

A look at chapter two keeps this theme going – in chapter one, Jesus is the Son of God and above all the heavenly host – indeed the angels also worship Him.

I. We must hear and believe those who heard Him (Jesus), those who believed Him first.
