Core Message
The podcast emphasizes that mindful parenting is about being present and aware during difficult moments, not achieving perfect calm. It acknowledges that children's nervous systems are still developing and that a parent's regulated presence literally helps build their child's capacity for emotional regulation.
In DBT, this vital skill helps us maintain emotional balance through practical daily habits. Let's break it down:
* Accumulate positive experiences
* Build mastery
* Cope ahead with difficult situations.
The PLEASE part reminds us to treat our Physical illness, Limit screen time, balance Eating, avoid negativity, balance Sleep, and get Exercise.
What makes this skill so transformative is the amazing connection between our physical and mental - self-care and emotions. When we neglect to take care of ourselves, we are vulnerable to emotional instability. So, it makes sense that when we honor our physical needs while creating positive experiences and competence, we create a buffer against emotional distress.
I guess you really can call this my Cope Well framework. Here are three key strategies from the pod:
* Create consistent regulation opportunities - Build daily practices that calibrate your nervous system before you need it, such as morning meditation or mindful breathing breaks throughout the day.
* Use movement as medicine - Change your emotional state through physical activity, even just five minutes of movement like walking, stretching, or dancing.
* Practice self-compassion and curiosity - Develop an "observing self" that witnesses emotions without being consumed by them, asking questions about what you're experiencing.
I also recommend some daily habits for emotional wellness:
* Setting intentions before sleep
* Practicing gratitude upon waking
* Listening to healing frequency music in the morning
* Setting an intention for the day
The goal isn't perfect happiness but resilience—how quickly you can return to equilibrium after disruption.
Implementation strategy: whenever strong emotions arise, acknowledge them by saying "I notice [emotion] appearing right now," followed by three conscious breaths while feeling your feet on the ground.
