Discipleship Questions

1.  Have you ever suffered because a judge or person in authority failed to do their job well?  How did you feel?  How did it affect you?

2.  In Psalm 5, David not comes to God with his words, but also with his groaning.  What does this teach us about the heart and character of God?

3.  What are some of God’s attributes listed in this Psalm?  How do those attributes influence the way you see and approach God?

4.  This Psalm teaches us that those who take refuge in God sing for joy.  What is the connection between God as refuge and our own personal joy?

Discipleship Questions

1.  How have you experienced distress in your life? How has your distress affected your heart towards God?

2.  How does knowing that God is your righteous Judge encourage you when you suffer?

3.  So often, anger can lead to sin.  What are some examples of individuals experiencing anger that does not lead to sin?

4.  The joy of knowing God far exceeds the joy of “grain and wine”, but sometimes grain and wine can take the place of ultimate joy in our lives.  What things are you tempted to seek your ultimate joy in?

1.  Do you feel to approach God with your pain, sorrow, or fears?  Why or why not?

2.  What does it mean for God to be our shield?  How has God been your shield in the past?

3.  In the sermon, Pastor Jon talked about bring the truth of the gospel to bear on our experiences.  How does David do that in this Psalm?  How does it transform him?

4.  What areas in your life do you currently need to bring the truth of the gospel to bear upon?  How does presently believing the gospel transform your perspective on your current situations?

2. In the midst of the nations raging, God is unmoved. What does this reveal about God’s attributes?

3. How can these verses give you hope and steadfastness in the midst of conflict?

4. This text speaks of the entire earth belonging to Jesus. How does this truth affect the way we see the world? How does this affect the way you think about Jesus?

1. The Psalms are full of powerful and meaningful images. What images of contrast can you identify in Psalm 1? What do they mean?

2. What does Psalm 1 teach us about what it means to be flourish as a human being?

3. What is the outcome of a life lived in defiance to God and his law?

4. What is the outcome of a live lived in submission to God’s law?

1. Of the evidence provided to support the resurrection account (empty tomb, personal encounters, appearing to large crowds) which do you find most compelling? Why? What questions do you have regarding the resurrection of Jesus?

2. Mark tells us that the disciples were very reluctant to believe the Jesus had risen. How can this fact encourage you in your own discipleship?

3. Mark stressed the importance of belief and baptism. Why is baptism so important? What does it mean?

4. Jesus promised that he would help his church. How did he fulfill that promise in the book of Acts? How have you seen Jesus help his church in your own life?

1.  Have you ever lost a close friend or dearly loved family member?  How did you feel?  How might your own experience provide insight to how Jesus’ friends felt after his crucifixion?

2.  Read 1 Corinthians 15:14 & 17.  Why do you loose the gospel when you loose the resurrection?

3.  Jesus plainly told his disciples multiple times that he would be crucified and would rise on the third day.  Why do you think they were so slow to believe?  What does this teach us about the nature of our own hearts?

4.  Why do you think the two Mary’s responded to the resurrection with trembling, fear, and astonishment?

Discipleship Questions

1.  The crucifixion is the world’s verdict against God.  What does the verdict reveal about the world and the way it sees God?

2.  Why do you think the manner of Jesus’ death lead to the centurions confession?

3.  Multiple times, Jesus was offered a drink that would have eased his suffering.  Each time, he refused.  Why do you think he chose not to receive what was offered?

4.  What is the significance of the curtain tearing?  Read Hebrews 9 for helpful insights.
