The book of 2 Samuel picks up where 1 Samuel left off-the death of King Saul. Ironically, the account in 2 Samuel 1 tells us that a young Amalekite man "finished Saul off" after Saul had been critically wounded in battle. It's ironical because the man was an Amalekit-the very people Saul was instructed as king to destroy. But he didn't. The one thing that Saul was supposed to destroy came back to destroy him! How can we fight the battle of the flesh so that we are not destroyed in a similar way? That's the topic of today's study with Pastor Gary Hamrick.

King Saul dies a defeated man (in more ways than one). The closing chapters of 1 Samuel paint a grim picture of a man who started out well, but did not finish well. In desperation, he even consults a medium-a witch-in an effort to get advice. The life and legacy of Saul are tragic reminders to us of what happens when we break fellowship with God. In an attempt to elude Saul, David mistakenly thought that the best place he could hide was in Philistine territory. It was true that Saul wouldn't look for him there, but it was not true that it was "the best place" to be. No matter how bad things get, it is NEVER best to be in enemy territory.
