  • A Quiet Place & A Quiet Pace // Summer Mixtape: A Playlist of the Psalms

The Early Church regularly used the Book of Psalms as an unending source of insight for the Christian life—to inspire faith, to praise God, and to encourage one another. This summer, we’re going to do the same thing at Cornerstone. We’re making a playlist of some of the Psalms greatest hits, compiling a mixtape that we believe will help inspire you and motivate you during the dog days of summer.

Scripture says, “Truly my soul finds rest in God.” It’s a beautiful concept in theory—to rest in God—but in reality? It sounds so abstract. What does it actually look like to find rest in God? Can I even afford to rest in today’s fast-paced culture? The answers to these questions point us to the truth that there’s more to it than just finding a quiet resting place in God, but learning a quiet resting pace from God.

Have you ever made a bad investment? Put your trust and faith in something that just didn’t pan now? Of course you have…we all have. A career, a relationship—we invest our time, talent, and treasure…and then the bottom falls out. But the good news is that here is an investment we can make that will never give a bad return. And we can start today.

Where do you run when you need safety? Who do you go when you need refuge? When the hard times come, we all go to somewhere or to something. But what if we started going to Someone? How would our life change—especially the challenging moments—if God truly became our source of refuge?

We may be in the middle of summer, but it’s never too early to start celebrating Thanksgiving! And no, we’re not talking about turkey, pumpkin pie, and football. We’re talking about cultivating an attitude of gratefulness. Thanksgiving shouldn’t stem from a date on the calendar, but on a realization of all that God has done.

  • Smokes, Shots & Substances // Talking Elephants & Tipping Cows

You know those topics that are taboo? The topics that polite conversations avoid? The topics that we’re all thinking about it, but we’re not talking about—especially at church? Yeah...we’re going there. Politics, sex, alcohol, suicide, hell, suffering. We’re talking about all of these “Elephants in the Room” and we might even tip some “Sacred Cows” that have been built up in the process. Now you might be thinking: “This is going to be uncomfortable.” You’re right. It’s going to be uncomfortable...and eye-opening, healing, necessary. There is no better, safer place to discuss these topics than church. So with that in mind...can we talk?

    --

Alcohol, marijuana, painkillers, The Opioid Epidemic. We ignore substance abuse to our own peril, and often until it is too late and addiction has set in. We don’t want church to just be a place where people come to heal from substance abuse. We want church to be a place where we help substance abuse never start in the first place. And it all begins with a conversation...

Suicide, depression, and self-harm are not “edge issues” that affect a few, select people. For you or someone you know, these so-called “edge issues” have sadly become their own worst enemy—the voice of depression or self-hate drowning out all else. How in the world do we address it? Does God’s Word give us any help, or are we alone with this pain that is getting worse with every passing day?

Marriage, sex, relationships, divorce, masturbation, dating, singleness—we’re hitting on all of it! But isn’t the Bible kind of outdated when it comes to this topic? What can we learn about sex, love, and dating in 2022 from a book that was written over 2,000 years ago in the ancient Middle East? The answer may surprise you—and tip over a few sacred cows along the way.

What’s the oldest objection to the Christian faith? The Problem of Evil. This “problem” is actually a philosophical question—and a good one at that. “How do we reconcile the existence of evil and suffering with an all-powerful, all-loving, all-knowing God?” I mean—can we? Can the Christian faith make a compelling explanation for why there is such pain and tragedy in the world?

Thanks to AC/DC, hopping on the “Highway to Hell” after you die has become a trendy option for the afterlife. But that’s just because lots of people don’t truly believe in Hell—no one would want to go there if it’s really how the Bible describes it. I mean, is there even a “there” to go to? Is Hell a real place? Where people will be forever? Punished for all eternity? I mean...really?

Is there anything more divisive than politics? Political views turn brothers into enemies quicker than almost anything else. Obviously, that shouldn’t be the case. But what’s the appropriate, Christian approach to politics? How do we best engage in public policy, voting, and political discourse? How do we hold political beliefs, honor Jesus, and love others at the same time?
