In a world where things change minute by minute, one thing is consistent—we’re losing our faith. Every year, the percentage of people identifying as “Christian” drops lower and lower. People just aren’t buying what the Christian faith is selling...maybe you aren’t buying it. Maybe it’s the Church’s treatment of people groups. Maybe it’s your own past trauma. Maybe it’s the injection of politics into the pulpit. Whatever the reason, the Christianity you knew began to crumble, and so did you. But if you’re walking this difficult path, there’s good news—God is not afraid of your deconstruction. In fact, your deconstructing faith could be the doorway to a deeper faith. When a house is beyond saving in its current form, it is “deconstructed”—taken down to the studs. This is done so that a new house can rise in its place. Research in the mid-2010’s asked people to use word association with the word “Christian.” The main responses? “Bigoted”, “judgmental”, “hypocritical.” Yikes. It seems the biggest obstacle to the Church has been the Church. It’s true there are plenty of wonderful Christians, but it’s also true that many professing the name of Jesus have hurt untold amounts of people. So how do we process and move past the hurts and damaged witness of the Church itself?

How do we wrestle with the idea that one of the biggest drivers of deconstruction is the Bible? The violence in the Old Testament, the examples of slavery and polygamy...these are difficult to reconcile. When you were little, someone telling you, “...because the Bible says so…” may have been good enough. Not anymore. Now you’re a grown up with grown up doubts—and those grown up doubts deserve grown up answers.

Deconstruction is often a terrifying journey. The faith that you thought you knew crumbling around you? It disrupts and challenges the very core of what you believed was true. But what if the faith that you knew isn’t the faith that is true? What if your faith was actually built on a counterfeit version of Christianity? And what if deconstruction is a doorway to a deeper faith?

Jesus routinely sought out the outcasts—prostitutes, pagans, tax collectors. And something amazing happened when he did…instead of their sin making Jesus unclean, his presence brought them healing. And King Jesus is still doing the same today. He is drawing our sin onto himself, conquering it, and providing us with new, purpose-filled life. Long live the King!

Here’s the fact of the matter—Jesus is King. Right here, right now. His coronation isn’t off in the distance, one day when “every knee will bow and every tongue confess.” He’s already inaugurated and initiated his Kingdom…and he did it in the most unexpected way imaginable.

As the Kingdom of God advances forward, an Enemy is constantly attempting to snuff it out. And that Enemy is not people who vote or think differently than you. In fact, our Enemy isn’t flesh and blood at all. And the sooner we realize that, the better off our relationships will be.

If God is our King and we’re living in his Kingdom, that means all other “kings” and “kingdoms” must be exposed for the imposters they are. We need to rid our lives of unworthy things competing for our hearts. So how do we stay focused on Jesus and build a Kingdom mindset?

Remember meeting your significant other’s family for the first time? How it gave you more context and clarity into who they are? The same is true of Jesus. We don’t appreciate the fullness of his identity until we realize that he is the culmination of an ongoing story between the God of the Universe and the people that he loves.
