Cornerstone Truth

I don’t think I have ever begged you to join the assembly at the Pleasant Hill Church of Christ.  It might seem strange if I did.  I do remember, as you might, our brother Paul begged the brethren in Rome to listen to his instruction when he said, “I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God…”  The word beseech can be rendered beg!  So I earnestly ask that you join us this morning or find the sermon on our webpage later today and listen very carefully.  I you are not able to do this I ask you do you own very careful study of the sermon passage this morning and be honest about the present state of your relationship with Christ.  This morning’s sermon is taken from Revelation 3:14-22.  Have you every been self-deceived?  How can a person know if they are self-deceived unless some one convicts them of the self induced delusion of reality.  This morning in the passage from Revelation I will be teaching from, Jesus warns the church of self-deception, apathy, and a self induced stupor towards truth and the practice of His righteousness and holiness in doing His will from a heart of fervent love!  The LORD is calling us all to evaluate or lives and commit ourselves to a more zealous love, devotion and service to Him!

Do you remember singing the children’s song, “Jesus Loves Me” when you were younger?  It is with great excitement and expectation I look forward to the day when I stand before my King and hear Him say with a heart and expression of deep and abiding love, “Come, you who are blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.  And again, Well done, good and faithful slave, you were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things, enter into your rest!”  This morning we will hear our Master tell us of the church He loves!  We will learn about the faithful brethren in the city of Philadelphia who were loved by Christ Jesus because they were doing the will of our heavenly Father!  I wonder what Jesus would say about the Pleasant Hill Church?  I wonder if we, each one of us, like the brethren described in Philadelphia, are faithfully doing the will of God, holding to His word of perseverance, being strengthened to endure the trials and temptations that the future holds for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose in Christ Jesus.  Let each of us use this great example of a local congregation in the exercise of our faith and gifts in serving the LORD Jesus Christ together until He comes.  Let us labor as a loving family member, encouraging one another day after day until He returns bring glory, honor, and praise to those who have sacrificially served Him according to His will!

This morning we continue to listen of our Christ and King as we desire to learn from Him how we can overwhelmingly conquer the devil through Him!  As we examine the seven churches of Revelation chapters two and three we are gleaning valuable information to build our faith so we may the wonderful words, “well done good and faithful servant!” 

This morning we will listen to the Master as we learn of the challenges and call to the church at Sardis.  In so doing, we will discover another set of truths to help us examine ourselves so we be equipped to purge the evil and possess the good that is necessary to enter into our eternal rest victorious!  The first focal point will be to understand the nature of deeds being manifest by the those in the church at Sardis.  It seems they were very busy but their deeds were “not complete” according to Jesus.  They were lacking several critical essentials.  The second point in my lesson is titled “Wake up!”  Jesus instructs those in the Sardis fellowship with specific things they must begin to do in order to be prepared for His coming for them.  Finally, we will listen to our LORD as He calls those in the Sardis church and to us also to victory and reward

The Scriptures teach us we overwhelmingly conquer through Christ who loves us!  Christ, through faith, victoriously conquered the devil, destroying his power over those of us who walk by the same faith as Christ.  This morning’s sermon is titled, “The Victorious Faith of Christ – Purges, Possesses, and Perseveres!”- Lesson #2  We will hear Christ’s call to Christians throughout the ages to be victorious by purging themselves of sin through repentance, possessing the great and glorious character of Christ in faithfulness, and to persevering until death.  This sermon will be preached over the course of three Lord’s Day Morning sermons.  Today we will examine Christ’s call to the Christians in the cities of Pergamum and Thyatira.  Christ, in His presentation to each of the churches, is pointed in His calling them to repent of specific sinful behaviors brought on by evil people and influences in their respect cities and congregations.  He is also quick to encourage and support them in the acts of righteousness and Christ-like faith and character. Finally, He calls Christians to persevere and never give up until they have passed on to glory!

It has been said countless times that fundamentals win games!  This concept is true in nearly any pursuit in life.  Just as there are foundational truths in building a strong resilient marriage and family so there are fundamental, cornerstone truths, upon which a victorious life in Christ can be achieved.  The one cornerstone truth that stands supreme above all others in the bible is the truth that Jesus is the Christ the Son of God.  Jesus said He would build His church on this truth!  This morning we will return to 1 John 1:1-5 to discover this truth once again to reinforce and build our victorious faith so that our confession has the substance and manifests evidence of our conviction, trust, and reliance upon Jesus as our Lord!

Please join me as we finish answering the question, what does it mean that Jesus is our Christ and the Son of God?
