In Los Angeles, ambulances are backed up to admit new patients to hospitals for up to eight hours. Patients in ICUs have more than quadrupled since the first of November. EMTs have now been instructed not to bring people with little chance of survival into hospitals and to conserve oxygen in the field.
To figure out why England has gone into lockdown, consider that one in 50 people in private households there are estimated to have had the coronavirus in the week ending January 2. And that’s not counting people in hospitals, care homes or other institutional settings.
Former FDA chief Dr. Scott Gottlieb warned the new South Africa mutation is concerning because it appears to inhibit antibody drugs. This ability to evade prior immunity means antibodies Covid survivors might have, as well as antibody drugs, may not be as effective.
Germany has extended that country’s current lockdown by three weeks until Jan. 31 and tightening curbs on social contacts. They’ve also called for new restrictions on movement for people in areas with high infection rates. And even though Israel’s being hailed for its effective vaccine rollout, it’s locking down a third time. It’s being blamed on the faster spreading U.K. strain of the virus.
The head of the World Health Organization is disappointed Chinese officials still have not finalized permission for a team of experts to go there and examine the origins of COVID-19. It’s a rare critique of Beijing by that organization and he made it clear this mission is a priority.
The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Pershing, NV. Bethel Census Area, AK. Kusilvak Census Area, AK. Bent, CO. Montour, PA. Braxton, WV. Rooks, KS. Pecos, TX. Perry, IL. And Adams, IL.
There are now 8,350,770 active cases in the United States. The current Top 10 states by number of active cases: California, Florida, New York, Arizona, Georgia, Virginia, Texas, Missouri, Maryland, and Colorado.
The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Arizona, West Virginia, Utah, Kansas, and New Jersey.
The infection reproduction rate is currently highest in New York, Florida, South Carolina, New Jersey, and Washington. The states with the lowest reproduction rate are Wisconsin, Oregon, Michigan, Montana, and Minnesota.
There’ve been a total 357,156 deaths in the US reported as COVID-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.71%.
The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 433. Texas 277. Arizona 253. Michigan 217. Pennsylvania 187. New York 157. Illinois 150. Indiana 149. New Jersey 120. And Florida 110.
Globally, there are 23,425,674 active cases.
There were 570,738 new cases around the world in the last 24 hours against a high of 748,974 reported on December 11.
The five countries with the most new cases: the United States 225,558. The U.K. 60,916. Brazil 57,447. Russia 24,246. And France 20,489.
There have now been 1,867,585 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide. Down 3% over 14 days.
