In today's episode, Alex Mateas and I explore pride, shame, and the lens of care. Specifically, we discuss the shame that comes with dealing with pain and injury. We discuss the difficulties men have in seeking help when injured and in dealing with the injuries on an emotional level. Alex and I explore how pride can use shame to keep us from seeking help. We also discuss how much of this shame stems from not wanting to be a burden on others, which is related to how men in our society are taught to be fixers, providers, and protectors. These identity characteristics focus men's attention on other people in their need to serve their families, which can limit their ability to care for themselves. This is what we call the lens of care, wherein the lens is usually focused on others instead of ourselves - leading to discomfort when we need to help ourselves.
