Have you ever had a really bad day where everything seems to go wrong? Imagine Peter feeling the same way in this Bible passage. Fishing is his whole world—it's what he's committed his life to, how he supports his family, and a big part of his identity. Even though he's a pro at fishing and knows the waters well, after a whole night of fishing, he comes up empty-handed.
Then, Jesus steps in with a three-part request for Peter to follow. First, when Peter just wants to call it a day and head home after a tough night, Jesus asks him to take him in the boat so he can talk to a crowd. Despite being tired, Peter agrees. After the teaching is done, just when Peter thinks he can finally rest, Jesus asks him to go back into the deep and cast his nets again. Even though this is probably the last thing Peter wants to do, he responds with a reluctant "because you say so." It's in this moment of obedience that Jesus takes care of Peter's needs—both his mental well-being and his sustenance.
Yet, Peter rejects him, pushes him away, and even asks him to leave because Peter feels unworthy. We often think we need to get ourselves all cleaned up before encountering Jesus, but the truth is that Jesus is already with us, inviting us not to fear our brokenness but to understand that we are completely surrounded and made clean by his holiness.
Jesus' invitation isn't about how prepared we are; it's about how prepared he is. He is right there with you, reminding you of his closeness and inviting you to respond in obedient submission today.
