Our attitude toward God’s law is tragically warped today we view it as a burdensome restraint on human freedom, when in truth it is a gracious gift of love from our covenant God. To the sinner it restrains evil, but to the redeemed it is the very path of righteousness and life. Psalm 119 reveals the heart of the matter: “Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage” (Ps. 119:54). Astonishingly, the Psalmist calls God’s laws his songs of praise zemir, joyful hymns of delight! Just as a godly America once gave its people something to sing about when doors were unlocked, crime was rare, and church was the heartbeat of the community so obedience to God’s law brings true peace, joy, and communion with Him and with one another. Sin destroys fellowship; faithful obedience restores it. The word “seizure” once meant lawful ownership and peaceful possession in old English law, yet today it signifies confiscation by force the very opposite. Failure is assured when a person insists on absolute independence denying all debt to God and man while continuing to blame others for every frustration and defeat. This spirit of self-rule, masquerading as strength, is in fact a disease of the soul that mirrors the original demonic temptation to be “as God,” independent of all authority. Such independence leaves a man enslaved to his own appetites, ruled by pride, lust, anger, and frustration, and haunted by insecurity and defeat. True freedom comes only when this false independence is surrendered, responsibility for sin is acknowledged, and Christ is welcomed as King. When Christ reigns, the believer is no longer trapped by his own weakness but lives under the power, protection, and unfailing success of God Himself, finding liberty not in self-rule but in joyful submission to the Lord of hosts.

In “Abelard,” Rushdoony argues that Peter Abelard’s revival of pagan philosophy reintroduced a fatal division between law and love, deed and intent, dissolving the Biblical unity of justice, grace, faith, and works under God’s sovereign decree. By claiming that those who crucified Christ did not sin because they believed they were acting rightly, Abelard shifted moral authority from God’s law to the subjective heart of man, redefining sin as faulty intent rather than lawbreaking. This move assumed man’s natural goodness and reduced evil to ignorance, laying the groundwork for antinomianism, moral relativism, and ultimately statist tyranny. When law is no longer God’s revealed righteousness but man’s creation, sovereignty transfers either to autonomous individuals or to the state as god walking on earth. You've been told — maybe never in those words — that the more Christian you are, the less useful you become. Joseph was a slave, falsely accused, thrown in prison. Not one circumstance was ever in his favor. Yet he ended up second only to Pharaoh, running the greatest civilization on earth — and he was elevated by pagans, not in spite of his faith but because of it. The principle is Luke 16:10: faithful in the least, faithful also in much. It wasn't luck, and Joseph wasn't the only one.
