Modern political thought has increasingly replaced God with the state as the source of morality. Influenced by thinkers like Hegel, Rousseau, and Marx, the state is now seen as the voice of history, reason, and moral progress, while politicians and experts assume the role once held by prophets under God’s law.

Biblically, morality judges the state; in modern thought, the state defines morality. Sin is redefined as ignorance, redemption as education, and salvation as political or bureaucratic action. This shift turns opposition to the state into moral rebellion and casts Christianity as an obstacle to “progress.” The result is a growing conflict between Biblical faith and a utopian, statist religion that claims moral authority for itself.

Asking the wrong questions always yields wrong answers just as the trick question “Have you stopped beating your wife?” forces a false dilemma and incriminating replies. Today we still fall into such traps: “Is it heredity or environment that determines man?” Both sides evade the real issue by denying personal responsibility. Much of modern politics, education, and social debate is built on these misleading questions that obscure rather than solve the crisis. We are told to “fix” economic, racial, political, or environmental problems, yet failure only multiplies because the root problem is not a list of issues but man himself a sinner in rebellion against God. The only question that truly matters is the one the Philippian jailer asked Paul: “What must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30). Until we start there, every other question is a distraction or deception. Like God’s piercing word to Adam “Where art thou?” (Gen. 3:9) right questions compel us to face reality, confess sin, and turn to Christ. Many who loudly oppose theonomy nevertheless selectively affirm God’s law when it aligns with their preferences, enforcing Old Testament commands such as prohibitions on cross-dressing, bestiality, or sexual immorality while denying the continuing authority of the law as a whole. This inconsistency exposes the flaw in the claim that only laws repeated in the New Testament are binding, since Scripture itself does not support a rigid separation between “moral” and “civil” law, nor does grace nullify God’s revealed standards. By rejecting theonomy in principle yet reintroducing biblical laws piecemeal, such critics become covert theonomists while functionally practicing autonomy placing themselves as judges over God’s law. As Cornelius Van Til made clear, the real issue is ultimate authority: theonomy, submission to God’s law, versus autonomy, self-law rooted in Genesis 3:5. These two positions are irreconcilable, representing Christianity versus humanism, and to sit in judgment over God’s law is ultimately to surrender the sovereignty of the triune God.

In A.D. 840, Bertram of Corbie wrote that the soul is not nourished by physical bread but by “the bread of eternal life,” the Word of God and His grace. As Jesus declared, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matt. 4:4). Today we have unprecedented material abundance fine clothes, shelter, and ease yet ulcers, fear, and discontent abound. The substance of life is missing. Students from prosperous homes riot for “rights” and more possessions, ignorant of true poverty, while material solutions alone breed perpetual frustration. Christ warned that the thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy, but He came that we might have life abundantly (John 10:10). Without Jesus Christ, the true bread of life, no amount of wealth can satisfy. Those who offer only material answers are not helpers but thieves. Worry is one of the easiest and most effective paths to failure because it replaces trust in God with obsessive self-reliance and fear. Instead of solving problems, worry multiplies them, poisons peace of mind, damages health, and turns a person into his own worst enemy. The worrier carries a heavier burden in his imagination than life itself ever imposes, suffering more from anticipation than from reality. At its root, worry is a denial of God’s sovereignty and care; it assumes that life rests on our frail abilities rather than on the power of Almighty God. If a man trusts only himself, he has every reason to worry but if God is truly God, and if He has revealed Himself in Jesus Christ, then worry is both needless and destructive. True confidence, peace, and success come not from anxious vigilance but from surrender, casting every care upon the Lord who bears our burdens and whose everlasting arms never fail.

The modern Green movement is not science — it is the revival of pagan Gaia worship, replacing the Creator with nature as the source of law and truth. From the Enlightenment's natural law to Darwin's mindless evolution to the deified state, Western man traded revelation for revolution — and the endpoint is Earth First calling for ninety percent of humanity to be eliminated. Christians alone hold a creation mandate for true stewardship of the earth.

Our Lord declares in Matthew 10:29–31 that God cares even for the sparrows, yet He affirms, “Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.” History has often contradicted this truth: for centuries in England, royal forests and game preserves placed deer and wildlife above the lives of common people farmers could not protect their crops from marauding deer, and better records were kept of the deer in Windsor Forest than of the human population. Oliver Cromwell was beloved by farmers for ending this unnatural priority; when Charles II restored the old order, animals again ranked higher than men. Puritanism fiercely protested such elitism, insisting that man, made in God’s image, is of infinitely greater worth than beasts or birds. Yet today, as faith in Christ fades, the same distortion reappears: many show contempt for their fellow men while lavishing tender mercies on animals and the environment, often proving cruel to people. God’s law calls us to care for creation (Prov. 12:10), but never to exalt it above humanity. Remember Christ’s words: you are worth far more than the flowers of the field, the wildlife, and many sparrows. In “Covenants and Law,” Rushdoony argues that the church’s abandonment of God’s covenantal law in favor of humanistic law has fueled the suicide of Western civilization by enthroning man’s autonomy—self-law—in place of God’s theonomy. He insists that law and grace are inseparable because every covenant requires law: God’s covenant with man is an act of sovereign grace in which divine law defines the life of grace, not its negation. By rejecting Biblical law, modern theology freed the state from accountability to God while demanding greater submission to civil authority, allowing positivist law to declare the state the sole source of justice. Rushdoony critiques figures like Kuyper for grounding civil authority in “common grace” while permitting autonomous lawmaking, a move that ultimately empowered revolutionary statism. Liberalism, pragmatism, and materialism then erased absolute values, replacing God with the state as lawgiver and paving the way for modern despotisms.
