In Psalm 9, David exults that God executes righteous judgment, declaring, “The LORD shall endure for ever: he hath prepared his throne for judgment. And he shall judge the world in righteousness” (Ps. 9:7–8). Without God’s judgments upon wayward men and nations, life would become unbearable; evil powers rise and fall, yet the Lord remains forever, a refuge for the oppressed and a destroyer of the wicked. God ministers to the world in two ways: grace through the church and justice through the state. When either fails its calling, God judges them both. We too are called to exercise grace and justice in our families and vocations, knowing that we ourselves will be judged if we neglect our duty. David’s prayer “Arise, O LORD; let not man prevail” (Ps. 9:19) reminds us that the alternative to divine judgment is the triumph of sinful man, turning the world into a living hell. Politics matters, but it cannot save society. Scripture limits the power of both church and state, placing responsibility primarily on covenant individuals and families. When politics is treated as a mechanism for salvation whether through constitutions, democracy, or popular will it becomes a false religion that promises moral renewal through coercion rather than transformation.

No political system can regenerate men or create a righteous society. Only a morally renewed people, under Christ’s lordship, can sustain true order and freedom. Salvation by politics is an illusion; lasting renewal comes only through Christ and obedience to God’s Word in every area of life.

Modern life, Rushdoony argues, is marked by escapism—a flight from reality into dream-worlds—seen first in the arts and especially in the university, where many flee the demands of work, family, and Christian morality for a quasi-monastic, anti-Christian “aesthetic” order; but politics has become an even more dangerous refuge, because the political escapist tries to abolish reality by legislation and revolution rather than accept biblical personal responsibility and the need for heart-change. He uses Marxism as the clearest case: its utopian promises (citing the 1903 party manifesto’s lofty language about liberty, rights, and labor protections) produced the opposite—totalitarian terror—because Marxism denies original sin and therefore trusts concentrated power in supposedly perfectible man, treating illusion as inevitable “historical truth” and punishing citizens for “sabotage” while the state itself wrecks productivity. The same unreality, he says, infects academia and liberalism, and even non-Christian conservatisms, whenever they assume man’s basic goodness. Drawing on Dostoevsky’s warning that limitless freedom in radical schemes ends in limitless despotism, he describes the socialist dream as a bid to become gods: a small ruling elite with “unbounded power,” the masses reduced to herd-like equality through absolute submission, the destruction of family bonds and property desires, and the loss of individuality. Every heated debate hides a question nobody wants to ask: by what standard is any of this being discussed? Scripture gives us our marching orders: we are called to bring every realm into captivity to Christ, until the triumphant day when “the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever” (Rev. 11:15). Superstition is fear expressed through charms, omens, and rituals meant to protect people from a universe they believe to be hostile, chaotic, and beyond control; whether ancient or modern, such practices reveal a deep conviction that blind forces rule life. Even when superstitious people claim belief in God, their god is functionally weak, unable to govern most of reality, leaving them to seek protection in symbols, horoscopes, or escapes from meaninglessness. Modern unbelief only intensifies this fear by portraying the universe as purposeless and impersonal. Scripture offers the only true answer: the sovereign God who created and governs all things, in whom there are no brute facts, no uncontrolled forces, and no meaningless events. When all of life is understood under God’s providence, fear gives way to confidence, superstition collapses, and believers can rest in the assurance that all things work together for good for those who belong to Christ.

A prominent professor once claimed the future is an open, unbound field with no effect on the present, yet Scripture declares otherwise: God governs every tomorrow just as He does the past and present. “Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world” (Acts 15:18); nothing happens apart from His sovereign providence. Our confidence rests in the Lord revealed in Jesus Christ, who alone determines the future not man, tyrants, or any scheme. Amid earthquakes, disasters, and warring nations, the Psalmist trusted unshakably: “God is our refuge and strength… Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed” (Ps. 46:1–2). True faith in God means trusting Him over every coming day, fearing Him rather than man or state, and conforming our lives to His will alone. Genesis 1:26. Rushdoony's opening move is blunt: every society has a god, and that god is whoever writes its laws. Courts, kings, "the people," the party whoever is the ultimate lawgiver is the deity. Change the law and you've changed the religion. Biblical law isn't rules bolted onto grace it IS grace: God's covenant treaty calling His people to exercise dominion under Him. Trade it for "natural law" and humanism takes the throne. That's not neutrality. That's a new religion, established by default.
