  • Surrendering the Ego: Embracing a Higher Consciousness

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode, I'm sharing some insights and thoughts on the concept of ego and how it often stands in the way of our true creative potential and spiritual alignment. I'll be sharing personal experiences and practical tools that have helped me and many others get the ego out of the way to live a more inspired and fulfilling life.

    Understanding Ego:

    • Ego isn't just arrogance; it’s a fundamental part of the human psyche that shapes our identity and often operates from a place of fear and survival.

    Ego vs. Higher Self:

    • Our ego keeps us grounded in the human experience, but many of us strive for a more spiritual life. Creativity is a divine experience that flows best when we get the ego out of the way.

    Tools to Bypass Ego:

    • Journaling: Morning pages from Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way have been transformative. Writing three full pages first thing in the morning helps clear the mental clutter.
    • Breathwork: Active breath patterns can facilitate profound transformation and help us reach deeper meditative states.
    • Meditation: Whether it’s traditional meditation or breathwork, these practices are crucial for distancing ourselves from the ego.

    Morning Routines:

    • Starting the day with structured practices like journaling and breathwork sets the tone for a more productive and creatively fulfilling day.

    Social Media and Information Overload:

    • We’re bombarded with information, which can overwhelm our nervous system. It's crucial to manage our exposure and find balance.

    Surrendering to the Process:

    • Sometimes, life blindsides us, forcing us to surrender and let go of the ego. These moments can lead to profound personal growth and spiritual alignment.

    Creative Flow and Inspiration:

    • The goal is to live in a state of flow and inspiration, where creativity comes effortlessly. This benefits not just us but also those around us.

  • Validation, Reflection and the Creative Journey

    Send us Fan Mail

"...none of us got enough love in our childhood. And that's showbiz, kid." - Roxy Hart from the musical *Chicago*

The need for acceptance and validation is a common struggle among creatives and extends to broader human experiences. What we didn't receive in our earliest years can often become the exact thing we seek out the most throughout our lives.

True creativity involves being vulnerable and authentic, sharing your genuine self with the world without being overly concerned about others' judgments. This is no small feat! Tapping into childlike wonder and working through inner child issues can unlock deeper levels of creativity and authenticity in your art.

We can't read our labels from inside the jar! We need healthy, safe, constructive validation and feedback, from trusted friends and mentors, in life and in business. This can help drive us forward and re-ignite our passion and dedication.

Creativity often involves expressing life experiences through various mediums, acting as a metaphor that conveys deeper truths and emotions. I do believe that is our mission as artists to bring more beauty and inspiration into the world.

Incorporating regular creative practices, such as journaling (morning pages from *The Artist’s Way*), can help clear mental blocks and open up new creative channels. Persistence is key. It can take time to receive external validation, and creatives must learn to self-source motivation and stay committed to their vision.

    Guest Mentions:
    - Taryn, host of the podcast *Memes, Metaphors, and Magic*, discussed the metaphorical nature of art in Episode 2
    - Matt Verba, author of *Funeral Theory*, highlighted the importance of genuine communication and not leaving things unsaid in Episode 12

  • From Pain to Purpose: How Authenticity Fuels Artistic Growth

    Send us Fan Mail

WARNING! Another vulnerable, deep, and honest solo episode ahead. In this episode, I am exploring the themes of vulnerability, authenticity, pain, process, and community. Taking a break from interviews, I'm going into my personal story and journey and the importance of being open, honest, and vulnerable about our experiences.

Vulnerability in Creativity: I've found that being vulnerable helps me release pain, shame, and fear. By sharing my truths, I not only heal myself but also empower others to do the same. I deeply value authenticity, especially in our world that's so often dominated by curated social media content.

The Power of Community: From my decade-long experience with 12-step recovery programs, I've learned the importance of sitting in circles, sharing our hearts, and holding space for one another. I dream of creating similar supportive communities for artists and creatives to share their processes and struggles.

Navigating Life’s Challenges: Reflecting on my personal experiences, including the loss of my stepfather, I've seen how challenging it can be to balance life, business, and creative focus during tough times. Significant life events are unavoidable and are an integral part of my journey of creation.

Self-Work and Personal Development: My ongoing work with *The Artist’s Way* by Julia Cameron and my studies of *A Course in Miracles* have shown me the transformative power of self-work. I believe this self-work is crucial for both our creative and personal growth.

Service and Positivity: I emphasize the importance of being of service, believing that helping others can be a powerful way to overcome our own struggles. I also discuss the need to balance positivity with avoiding spiritual bypassing and advocating for authenticity in acknowledging our true feelings.

Love and Inspiration: Love is a central theme in my life, in all its many forms. I am committed to bringing beauty and inspiration into the world through my creativity and encouraging others to find and share their own sources of inspiration.

Lessons from Ancient Wisdom: I draw parallels between the creative process and ancient wisdom traditions, seeing the journey of a creative as a way to experience, observe, and express life’s truths.

Creating Our Experience: I invite listeners to consider how they can be more authentic in their own lives and the impact of sharing their journeys. I believe we are all creators of our experiences, and that small acts of beauty and love can make a significant difference.

  • The Art of Giving Yourself Permission

    Send us Fan Mail

Are you waiting for permission? To start? To go all in? To make your dreams reality?

In this episode, I'm sharing some significant insights into the profound impact of giving ourselves permission in the creative process, and in life in general. Drawing from personal experiences and reflections, I explore the common tendency among creatives to wait for external validation before pursuing their passions and really going for what they truly desire.

This is a call to action, and encouragement to embrace your inner creativity, remember your calling, and take bold steps towards the life (or business) of your dreams. This is your permission slip, should you need it, to follow the dream that is in your heart and ignite the fire in your soul.
