Creepalachia

Local news is not fake news, and Appalachia has some incredible journalists who work hard every day to tell the stories of our communities. In this episode, I sit down with WVVA’s Joshua Bolden, Megan Bailey, and Zaria Stovall to talk about the life of a local news reporter, the pressure that comes with the job, and why local journalism still matters.

I may not be an avid outdoorsman, but I do have friends who are highly effective at this thing we call survival. Dwayne Moore with Full Rut Nation came on the show to talk all things nature, outdoors, and what it really takes to build something people connect with.

John Lucas was run over by an ambulance and dragged to his death in the hills of West Virginia, and as hard as that is to say, it is exactly what happened. But while his family waits for justice, it is just as important to remember who John was as a person, not just the horrific way his life ended.

This is one of those episodes where two hours feels like it went by in two minutes. Steve Murphy spent six years with the Bluefield, West Virginia Police Department before joining the DEA, where he worked undercover against some of the biggest drug operations in the country.

And when I say big, I mean Pablo Escobar big, because Steve played a major role in helping bring down the billionaire drug kingpin’s operation, with those efforts later helping inspire the Netflix drama series Narcos.

Ticks suck, figuratively and literally, and somehow this episode made me even more terrified of them than I already was. Leisa Moten joined the studio to break down Alpha-gal syndrome, a disease caused by the Devil’s Parasite that can completely change the way someone lives, eats, and even thinks about being outside.
