The younger son loses everything and the elder son has everything, but neither one is aware of the father’s love for both of them. The loving Father welcomes his wandering younger son and encourages his elder son.

This psalm is a prayer of the community (a communal lament, per PFAS). God’s current action of permitting defeat does not coincide with his past faithfulness. The faith contained in the prayer invites an understanding of suffering as a service to the kingdom of God.

God breathes life into the dead and dying through the Holy Spirit, restoring hope when hope is gone. What new thing is God bringing to life in our lives, in the church, in the world?

The disciples are waiting for the Holy Spirit – together…praying, without power – when strange things begin to happen.  The Holy Spirit fills them so they can speak about God’s power.

We welcome Pastor Beverly Weeks to teach from Acts 10:44-48 in a sermon titled "Even for Them and Us." The Holy Spirit comes upon the uncircumcised God-fearing Gentile listeners of Peter’s presentation of the gospel, prompting their baptism as evidence of the pouring out of the Holy Spirit.
