  • Crime Adjacent Live Episode 596: The Rahway River Ripper

How fast can you run a half mile? If you're really booking it? 5 minutes? 6?

Now imagine you see a loved one being attacked a half mile away. How fast could you get there to help?

This calculation was running through Daniel Baker's head on the morning of Oct. 20, 2015, in Brook Hollow, New Jersey.

Because as he sat in the comfort of his own kitchen, sipping coffee and watching his wife run down a path along the river, he saw a man suddenly emerge from the bushes and grab her.

The death of Dr. Caroline Harder that morning would be the first of more to come for a serial killer who preyed on lone joggers along the Rahway River in New Jersey.

This is Crime Adjacent episode 596: The Rahway River Ripper, told live in New York City during our tour.

OK, profilers. Can you solve an unsolvable murder?

Join host and serial killer survivor Chase Patrick live on stage for Crime Adjacent, the world’s biggest true crime podcast. Every week, at shows across the country, Chase reopens the most haunting, enduring mysteries from the grim underbelly of American true crime and challenges you to solve them.

“An atmospheric and immersive podcast where true crime and psychological thrillers intersect.” — Earworthy

From the Zodiac to the Rest Stop Killer, the Michigan Nightstalker to the Cross Country Killer, each episode unfolds like a real investigation — like the whip smart, nerdy love child of Murder, She Wrote and War of the Worlds — and dares you to unravel the mystery and provide justice for those who need it most.

It looks like a true crime podcast. It sounds like a true crime podcast. But what happens when the cosmology of our escapist entertainment looks terrifyingly like our real world? That’s Crime Adjacent. It’s a fully scripted, intimate, locked-room mystery that pulls back the curtain on our social obsession with true crime and what this fascination with humanity’s darkest impulses says about … us.

“Crime Adjacent is redefining the true crime genre.” — Podcasting Today

Crime Adjacent is written and performed by Mike Adamick, a former crime reporter turned contributor for NPR, The New York Times, and McSweeney’s. He uses degrees in sociology and gender studies from UC Berkeley, along with an obsession with criminal profiling, true crime, and Jessica Fletcher, to explore why people commit crimes, why we are enthralled with them, and who, ultimately, pays the price.

  • Crime Adjacent Live Episode 595: The Betrayal of Matilde Freeman

Matilde Freeman, age 12, practically skipped out of her house in Stockton, California, on Oct. 8, 2022.

Finally, she must have thought, finally. After years of bullying and a change of cities, she had made new friends.

On this Saturday afternoon, one of those friends invited Matilde over to hang out, listen to music, and plan outfits for an upcoming Karol G concert in Sacramento.

Hours later, a neighbor discovered Matilde. She had been brutally beaten, injected with drugs, and then left to die in an alley between homes.

Police quickly determined who had attacked her: three girls, ages 12 and 13, whom Matilde believed were her new friends.

But the question haunting the community was why.

Why did three girls team up to murder Matilde Freeman? And were they really the only ones to blame?

This is Crime Adjacent episode 595: The Betrayal of Matilde Freeman, told live in Philadelphia during our tour.

  • Crime Adjacent Live Episode 594: The Miraculous Discovery of Emily Voss

On a quiet a Saturday afternoon in October 1980, someone crept into the Voss household in Scottsdale, Arizona, and snatched 2-year-old Emily Voss from her crib while her mother was in the shower.

More than 40 years later, in Martha's Vineyard, a tourist from Scottsdale noticed something strange in the local newspaper. A woman photographed for a feature on the local garden club looked remarkably similar to a police artist rendering of what missing toddler Emily Voss would look like today.

Could it be? A baby kidnapped in 1980 living her best life as assistant town manager a country away in Martha's Vineyard? Discovered only because the right tourist was in the right place to see the right photo?

  • Crime Adjacent Live Episode 593: The Iowa Farmhouse Massacre

On March 16, 2003, the bodies of the entire Banda family, along with two of their neighbors, were discovered in their farmhouse cellar in Ashton, Iowa.

At first, police thought this was the result of an ongoing neighbor dispute over fences and farmland in this small community near the Minnesota border.

But police discovered something strange. None of the victims had any sign of trauma. There were no weapons, no signs of an argument, no visible reason why six seemingly healthy people entered a food cellar and never made it out alive.

  • Crime Adjacent Live Episode 591: The Murfreesboro Five

In the span of four years in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, from 2018 to 2022, five people died under suspicious or mysterious circumstances.

    A mother, a student, a police officer, a judge, and a lawyer.

You may have heard about this case on other true crime podcasts. Netflix did a rather solid and compelling documentary about two years ago called The Murfreesboro Five.

In each of these episodes and movies, there is some question about whether these cases are actually connected or whether it’s just one big coincidence — tragic accidents tied together only by internet conspiracies and corkboard, red string fantasies.

That all ends tonight. Because for the first time ever, Crime Adjacent can reveal publicly that one tiny, everyday item was discovered near each body, and some in the police department now think these cases are not just connected -- but murders.

This is Crime Adjacent episode 591: The Murfreesboro Five, told live in Milwaukee, during our tour.

On October 11, 2024, 28-year-old Emma Girma checked into the Silver Pines Hotel in downtown Idaho Falls, Idaho, and never checked out.

Where she was found and how she got there confounded investigators -- but not as much as their most pressing concern: Who would have done this to her?

  • Crime Adjacent Live Episode 589: The Disappearance of Xavier Barnes

On a Saturday night in 2004, 22-year-oild Xavier Barnes can be seen exiting the Iron Spike Saloon in Opelika, Alabama, with a phone to his ear.

He looks one way. Then another. He nods at someone.

And then he walks off camera and is never seen again.

For more than 20 years, police, online conspiracy theorists, and armchair detectives have posited that Barnes was killed for a drug debt by a connected drug dealer, that he was kidnapped by a jealous lover, or that he simply walked away from the life he was building as a promising psychology student.

In an attempt to piece together a mystery that has plagued Opelika and the University of Auburn for decades, this is the first comprehensive look at what really happened to Barnes that night.

  • Crime Adjacent Live Episode 588: The Slow Motion Murder of Dorothy Strasberg

When 27-year-old Dorothy Strasberg met a charming stranger in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2020, it felt like a love story.

The man swept her off her feet, won over her family, and convinced her to leave everything behind for a quiet life in rural North Carolina.

    Then the relationship changed.

Friends stopped hearing from her. Her money disappeared. Her world grew smaller as his controlling behaviors grew stronger.

By the time Dorothy realized she was trapped inside a pattern of coercive control, it was practically too late.

Thankfully, with the help of her friends and family, Dorothy made it out alive. She was finally free and safe.

Little did they realize, the breakup was only the beginning.

Because Dorothy soon found herself facing the most dangerous period of relationships for women -- the break up moment experts say carries the greatest risk of lethal violence for women because of violent men and a society that prioritizes one person's potential over another's life.
