  • Vol. 2 Ep. 13 Theresa Sokyrka
Theresa Sokyrka's decision to become rootless has been the prime factor in her recent music. After making it to the final episode of her season of Canadian Idol and recording a successful album of standards, Theresa’s put out a second album: Something is Expected, consisting entirely of original music. Dodging the pop star route that seemed to be laid out for her, the 2007 release showed that Theresa’s years away from her hometown of Saskatoon had formed her sound into a mature, reflective songwriting style, equal parts classic and innovative. She enlisted the help of producers John Collins (New Pornographers, The Evaporators), David Carswell (The Evaporators) and Mike Timmins (The Cowboy Junkies) to provide the musical backdrop that would allow her songs to come through. Rich, pure, sometimes angry, but often sweetly humourous, Something is Expected did fulfill expectations, and allowed Theresa to move on with both her life and her music.
That meant moving. Lots of moving. For the past ten years, Theresa has been criss-crossing Canada, never staying in one place for long. In fact, the only constant has been songwriting and performance. "Sometimes I feel that the only reason I move around so much is because I'm afraid that getting comfortable would create a monumental writer's block,” she says. “I've always been someone who craves excitement. And there's nothing more exciting than moving to a new Canadian city. I think Montreal might have me by the short and curlies for a while, but Halifax may be the next city to conquer.”

  • Vol. 2 Ep. 11 Crag Cardiff
Craig Cardiff has been passing around a Book of Truths during his
shows and asking his fans to share something truthful in it — a story, a confession, a hope, a secret. The book gives fans a chance to write down something they might be too afraid to say out loud, and it gives Cardiff an opportunity to connect with the people who take time out of
their busy schedules to come to a show.
Those entries aren’t always easy to read. The stories can be heartbreaking, and they can leave Cardiff wanting to do something, to find the person who wrote in his book and tell them to hold on for tomorrow, that things will be OK.
Over the years, Cardiff has found himself writing songs that offer these little bits of hope for people to hold onto, and those songs are now reaching more and more people after he signed to New York-based AntiFragile Music, founded by Tom Sarig, who previously served as a Grammy-winning senior A&R executive at various major labels, in late 2018. Since founding Esther Creative Group, Sarig has worked with some of the most exciting musical artists in contemporary history, including Lou Reed, The Gaslight Anthem, Bryan Ferry, CAKE, the Violent Femmes, Miranda Cosgrove, Twin Atlantic, Blonde Redhead, Bebel Gilberto, and Against Me!, among others.
Cardiff’s songs have now been streamed more than 100 million times, and he has been heard on NBC’s award-winning television series This Is Us.

  • Vol. 2 Ep. 10 Wanda Gronhovd
Gifted with a warm, yet powerful voice, Wanda Gronhovd got the music bug early in life with the songs she heard at church in her hometown of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. After moving to Montreal in the ‘90s she began dabbling in songwriting and made her first performance at a house concert in 1997.
However, she put music on the backburner to focus on family and a nursing career until she moved back home to Saskatchewan a few years ago.
Now based out of Regina, Gronhovd got down to business and released her well-received debut album Awakening in 2014.
We also want to wish Wanda a Happy Belated Birthday. Wanda's Birthday was October 13th!

  • Vol. 2 Ep. 9 Francine Honey
Hard-luck stories can have happy endings. Especially in Francine Honey's world.
"Some of these songs are about going through tough times and then getting to the other side," the Ontario singer-songwriter says of her third record To Be Continued... "I know I've certainly been through my share of struggles. But it's important to have hope and know you're not alone. If you're going through something, someone else has gone through it too. And you have to remember: You don't know what's around the corner. Your 'to be continued…' might be beyond what you ever imagined."
She speaks from experience. Some five years after her first album — a homemade Christmas present for friends and family — the divorced mother of two and former federal civil servant is living the dream. She has the love of her life, the career she long denied herself, and an album that showcases her most striking and stirring compositions. "I'm so happy," she says. "I'm really proud of this record and how it all came together."
