  • Vol. 2 Ep. 8 Kim Mitchell
Kim Mitchell, guitarist, singer, songwriter, broadcaster chats about his newest song "Wishes"
“It’s like that classic car that’s been in the garage for a while – the one you’re going to strip down and restore ‘cause you know there’s something special there, but you just never seem to get around to it.”
That’s how Kim Mitchell thought of The Big Fantasize, his latest studio album, before finally rolling up his sleeves with co-producer and close friend Greg Wells (Keith Urban, Adele, Taylor Swift, 21 Pilots) and getting their hands dirty. Turns out there was something pretty sweet hiding under the hood…
The Big Fantasize marks the Canadian music icon’s eighth solo studio album (plus 5 as the leader of Max Webster) and first since 2007’s Ain’t Life Amazing. But where its predecessor was a fiery and fierce rock album anchored by big riffs and bigger swagger, The Big Fantasize is a more dynamic and musically expansive effort that perfectly encapsulates Mitchell’s prowess as a pure and compelling songwriter. In fact, he is soon to be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame joining other inductee’s like Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot and Neil Young
The sanguine lead track, “WISHES” is best described as an ethereal and enveloping soundtrack to a slow dance under the stars with a very timely message of having less and living more: of savouring lifes simplest pleasures.
“After very randomly reading A.C. Child’s poem ‘Wishes,’ I knew immediately I wanted to turn it into a song,” Mitchell explains. “The challenge was coming up with a melody and music that would be harmonically satisfying for me, yet present itself as simple, pretty, and properly serving the lyric.”
Musically, the verses came relatively quickly, though Mitchell soon realized that whereas the poem felt complete on its own, it didn’t seem that way in song – at least not yet. “I felt I needed something lyrically and musically to sum up the whole idea, and a deviation somewhere – a short musical passage that you could just float away with before coming back to the song’s final message,” he says.
That took patience and plenty of trial-and-error – years’ worth, in fact. “I’d leave it for months, come back and work on it, leave it again then come back, until one peaceful morning while looking out my front window with an acoustic on my lap, the refrain just came to me. I wasn’t even searching for it but there it was! The bridge I thought it needed so badly came right after and a sigh of accomplishment washed over me with the song finally finished.”
“I feel lucky to have been the conduit for this song to come to life. I hope I served it well cuz songwriters don’t always come up with the idea, most often the idea picks them and this lyric and song, through pure serendipity, now arrive as my first single at a particularly poignant and difficult time.”

  • Vol. 2 Ep.7 Rev. Cheri DiNovo
Reverend Dr. Cheri DiNovo, C.M. is an ordained United Church minister who performed Canada’s first legalized same sex marriage. She is currently the minister at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre for Faith Justice and the Arts.
Cheri is a Member of the Order of Canada, recognized for her contributions to provincial politics and for her lifelong advocacy of social justice.
As the former MPP for Parkdale–High Park, Cheri passed into law more pro-LGBTQ legislation than anyone in Canadian history, including Banning Conversion Therapy in Ontario, Parent Equality, and Trans Rights in the Human Rights Code. First elected into the Ontario Legislature in a by-election in 2006, she was re-elected in 2007, 2011 and 2014.
Cheri has been a 50+ year activist for LGBTQ issues. She was the only woman in Canada to sign the ‘We Demand’ statement in 1971—the first demand for gay rights on Parliament Hill. In 2012, Cheri succeeded in getting Toby’s Act passed, an amendment to the Ontario Humans Rights Code to include gender identity and gender expression—the first of its kind in North America. She made history again in 2015 by successfully passing Bill 77, which prohibits “Conversion Therapy” for youth (therapy intended to prevent young people from identifying as LGBTQ). This ground-breaking legislation also de-listed “conversion therapy” from OHIP. Following Cheri’s introduction of the Bill, President Barack Obama called for a ban of the practice in the United States, and Manitoba tabled legislation to ban the practice as well. Cheri has championed Parental Equality for LGBTQ parents with her Bill, Cy and Ruby’s Act. Cheri has also been honoured to be the Grand Marshal in Toronto’s Pride Parade.
Cheri is known as the “Queen of tri-party bills” for tabling the most bills in the Legislature that have all three parties’ support, and has also passed more Private Member’s Bills than any other MPP in Ontario’s record. She is known for her 2006-2007 $10 minimum wage campaign, through which over a million Ontarians saw their income increase by 28% over three years. Cheri successfully proposed a bill to fast-track benefits for workers suffering from PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). After 7 years, 4 tablings and 1 second reading, the government finally passed legislation to recognize PTSD as a workplace injury in April 2016. Cheri is also the author of the original Bill on inclusionary zoning, which gives municipalities the tools to address the affordable housing crisis. Her Bill, which tabled 5 times and passed 2nd reading twice, has the support of municipalities and organizations across Ontario. Cheri has been an outspoken advocate for cyclists and cyclist safety, including her “1-metre rule,” which the government passed as part of their larger transportation bill in 2015. Cheri has also been a staunch advocate for Tibetans, Roma, Ukrainian and other immigrant communities in Parkdale–High Park and Ontario. Cheri also founded Girls’ Government, a non-partisan initiative aimed at getting young girls engaged in the political process.

  • Vol. 2 Ep. 5 Sarah Harralson
After her grandfather passed in 2011, Sarah decided she would move to Nashville two years later to pursue music at Belmont University. A year after releasing her debut EP in 2014, she was discovered by Scotty Schultz, drummer of Shooter Jennings (Waylon Jennings’s son). Scotty opened up his publishing company, Raindrop Music LLC, in 2015 and after hearing Sarah’s original song “Watered Down Whiskey”, he knew he wanted to sign her right away. This would be Sarah’s first publishing deal. Scotty decided he would produce her first country EP, Watered Down Whiskey, of all original songs that Sarah has either written or co-written. "This EP will help many people and hopefully some will have their heart healed by her emotional lyrics," stated Music Update Central after hearing the release of her second EP in February 2018.
Sarah’s country influences range from The Dixie Chicks to Brandy Clark to Johnny Cash, which comes across on her second EP, Watered Down Whiskey. Scotty Schultz of Raindrop Music, LLC stated that, “she is a driven woman who deserves to be heard,” and the stories will definitely be heard.
