When the Apostles were branching out into what we now call World Missions. They were constantly praying and trying to discern the will of God regarding the evangelization of the world. Peter and the Apostles agreed that Paul and Barnabas should specifically reach the Gentiles, that is, people who are not Jewish. The only stipulation that they added was that Paul and Barnabas continue to keep helping the poor, in Jerusalem and presumably, wherever they were ministering. James specifically focuses on this idea in his letter, when he reminds Christians that true religion, which pleases God, takes care of widows and orphans. This is not just a New Testament idea! The Old Testament teaches, affirms, and reaffirms this commitment to caring for the poor. Isaiah 58 teaches us that true fasting—true piety—always helps those in need. The Gospel was advanced, often through the work of caring for the poor. This is why Cross Church is devoted to helping the poor and needy!
