This message is all about letting the word of God change us by not simply being hearers of his word but doers. Applying what we’re reading is what leads to life change. Use James’ words and metaphor of a mirror to help us do something about what God’s word is revealing about our lives.

James 1:22-24 NIV

22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

May we not merely have the word read, but lived.

If we can read it with open minds and open hearts, God will hold the Bible up to our lives as a mirror and use it to show us how to live.

Hebrews 4:12 NIV

12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

As we read the Bible is reading us.

Ask yourself “how is the Bible reading you?” What is God growing you in? Where would you like him to grow you?

Romans 15:4 NIV

4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

Paul writes in his letter to Timothy that the Bible is valuable, stating that it can teach, correct, and train us in our faith. Use this message to help listeners understand that if they want to thrive in their walks with God, the Bible is an essential tool for that. Help them see that the Bible is relevant for Christians today as it was relevant to readers in its original context. It trains through “teaching, rebuking, and correcting.”

It would be useful for us to get used to reading His word.

Ask God which of these you need from the Bible and ask Him to give it to you. This could come in the form of teaching, correcting, rebuking, and/or training.

The writer of Psalm 119 declares the word of God to be our guide. The metaphor he uses is that it acts like a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.
