  • Margo Macero - Episode 193

17 Dec 2013: Young singer/songwriter, Margo Macero, has studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and now leads her musical career; 'The Margo Macero Project.'

She has been an ardent entertainer-playing guitar since the age of seven. She continues to cultivate a reputation for herself by self-producing demos, publishing, establishing musical media networks, self-management and designing all works of lyrical and album artwork; and exhibits no signs of slowing down.
Her motivation is to continue the legacy and music of her uncle, Teo Macero, a producer and jazz icon for Columbia Records. Although Margo is a completely different artist at whole, she shares the same passion and motivation for music. Behind the glass, Margo Macero has co-written with well- known pianist, Bobby Fats Howard from 'Fatback.' Creating hip and haunting musical notions from 'Colors In The Sky,' 'You Are The One,' 'Dream On Boulevard,' 'It Is What It Is' and 'Make Believe.'
The artist has been known to deliver bone-chilling performances with aggressive guitar solos and powerhouse vocals of pure soul. Her undying passion and professional integrity from her performances has been described and reviewed by many as memorable and remarkable. Her sound has been compared to the likes of Janis Joplin, Melissa Etheridge, Joss Stone and Steven Tyler. The energy and uncompromising determination of Margo has been characterized as boundless. Music is not just a job; it is a journey of experience and lessons to be learned. With each environment come a different crowd and a different culture of audience.

  • Titanics - Episode 192

10 Dec 2013: Despite the resurgence of synthesizer-based bands in recent years, Albany has largely missed the blissed-out genre chillwave altogether. Which is ironic, given that what many New York City progenitors of the sound are attempting to romanticize looks a lot like our upstate summers. Its not surprising, then, that thisAlbany band would eventually come along and craft one of the genres great records. Lombardos vocals are verbed-out to gauzy effect and when Rogers guitar enters, its like a heaven-beam splitting the clouds. The interchange between his vocal offerings and Rogers glassy guitar creates that perfect vibe.An otherworldly sound to just drift away with. Crisp drums, warm synths, and big guitar riffs to great effect.

  • The Rattling Baddlies - Episode 189

05 Nov 2013: Raised in the Schoharie Valley, Durfees songs reflect his rural upbringing. Leaving pretense and posturing behind, Durfee performs with an aching honesty, pushing his picking capabilities to the limit. Story songs, breath-taking instrumentals, and truly original works dominate Durfees playing, with surprising covers and moments of lightness and laughter keeping listeners engaged.

Matt Durfees enchanting, reflective songs are drawn around complex, finger-picked acoustic-guitar lines, like a cross between American Beauty (Grateful Dead) and Nick Drakes Five Leaves Left. Too interesting to be lumped into the pop category, too smart for the freak-folk boom, Durfee is in a category all his own. - Metroland
Durfee also performs with as part of the acoustic rock trio The Rattling Baddlies alongside Thomas Krebs and August Sagehorn; the rhythm section from the Albany rock band Alta Mira.

  • Sandy McKnight and The Idea - Episode 187

24 Oct 2013: Sandy McKnight and The Idea began when Sandy had an idea: the idea was to make accessible pop music with lots of harmonies and great songs (similar to The Beatles). The band is unabashedly fun and melodic and all the unhip things a band can be. Sandy McKnight and The Idea is a power pop trio which is blowing minds with super memorable, hook-laden tunes, and a dynamic stage presence that takes one back to the sweat-soaked nights at the Marquee Club in 1960s London. This an exciting pop band with memorable tunes, great harmonies, and a dynamic stage presentation. If you like bands like The Who, The Raspberries, Badfinger or The Kinks, you get the idea! Dave Michaels of EXIT 97.7 says: 'It was great rock n roll! Loved the set! You guys really sounded hot!'

Sandy McKnight has been writing and performing his own songs since 1968. Critics have finally begun discovering his work, and are saying things like 'maybe a tribute album is in order', 'should have topped the charts in a just and perfect world', 'chances are good that youll find yourself singing along with the first song that you hear, and then youll be hooked., and 'McKnight has a big power-pop heart'. His live shows have been wowing old fans and making new ones.
Sandys notable projects have included: 1976 - Free N Easy, a dance funk band with the soon-to-be world renowned trombonist, Ray Anderson; 1978 - The Coupons, the New Jersey-based group that eventually became The Smithereens, with drummer Dennis Diken and Peter Dibella of Bell Sound; 1979-80 - Numbers, a NYC pop new wave band that made waves at CBGBs when that meant something; 1981-83 - Hard Knox, a hard pop band managed by Joel Diamond; 1982 - recording with producer Todd Rundgren at his studio, for the Jean-Yves Labatt (M. Frog) album; and, 1983-90 - The Truants, the Sandy-fronted legendary punk pop outfit whose recordings are still fresh today. In the 90s and 2000s, Sandy has been making great solo recordings, and producing projects for various bands and singer-songwriters. His recent box set, a 66-song retrospective of his career as a performer and songwriter over the last 30+ years, called 'How I Changed the World', has received rave notices. Sandy also writes comedy for live and TV shows, and his musical, 'The Big One', co-written with Liv Cummins, is performed often.

  • Two Cats in Suits - Episode 186

15 Oct 2013: Two Cats in Suits is a subset of The Last Conspirators. The Last Conspirators third album, A Celebration of Fury, is the followup to their critically acclaimed Warparty and When It All Comes Down releases. All Music Guide calls the Last Conspirators 'a powerful rock and roll band whose sound fuses old-school punk, roots rock, and heartland rock, with fierce, often politically charged lyrics on top. The Last Conspirators are fronted by singer and songwriter Tim Livingston a pioneering figure on the punk scene in New York States Hudson Valley.'

Nippertown says; 'Tim Livingston excels at writing hook-laden, politically charged paeans to pop culture, and his commando team play it rough and crunchy on the bands powerhouse sophomore disc; the follow-up to bands 2007 full-length debut 'War Party' - gets pretty close to capturing the energy of their live shows, and if the New York Dolls played sixties psychedelic pop, this is what it would all sound like. Potent stuff.' The Big Takeover Magazine weighs in; 'A five-song follow-up to Warparty, this equally potent recording hints these guys are not only are on to something good, theyre just getting started. Fronted by Upstate NY punk legend, Tim Livingston (whose credits go back to Killed-By-Death style Albany punks, the Morons), the band fills the same sonic space as the Clash, Adverts, Ruts, Stiff Little Fingers and New Model Army. If you want to know where the real songwriters in punk are this day and age, look no further.'
Warparty, a set of old-school rock and roll protest songs, was called by the Times Union ' The most potent politically charged disc of the year, walking the tightrope between punk passion and polished professionalism.' The Big Turn Over Magazine said: 'I hear Love, 60s blues rock balladry, ballsy post-punk mashers like 80s Australians, and dexterous guitars that prove ballast for Livingstons burning convictions like 'American Son' and our in-foreclosure U.S. of 'Innocent'. Harp Magizine called it: 'incisive and poetic; overall an engaging album ', while CHRONOGRAM said: 'a quartet that brings a welcome, Information Age crunch to the tough, melodic sounds of late 70s/early 80s Brit-punk; think The Clash, The Jam, maybe The Ruts or the UK Subs, but with slightly glossier production values and lyrics that take shots at the soul-sucking, high-tech Noughties.' Garage and Beat Magazine concurs, '60s psychedelia and 70s punk rage permeate this eclectic mix of angst rattled modern rock.'
